maternal bulls from Duff/OCC

I am wondering what PPL's experiences have been as far as which Ohlde bulls or Duff bulls have been the most complete and go on to make great cows. I used Duff's New Edition last year and am very impressed with the calves although it is only a few head, the calves are complete and have grow to them. Does anyone have any New Edition/New Attraction, or New Generation females that are in production? Thanks, Brent

We run at 6500 feet and up.  The only complaint with the OCC cattle I have had is they don't PAP very well.  A good friend of mine loved his Anchor and Doctor cows that could live at 7000 feet.

We have a really nice Duff New Edition heifer calf for sale in the barn right now. I like her a lot so far.

Does anyone have any Basic Instinct heifers producing for them. The steer that won the angus division @ the Iowa State Fair this year was a Basic Instinct and was really, really good. What about the flush mates Outer Limits,Standout, & Body Builder?

Oak Row Angus had some awesome Basic instinct calves. Love Anchor daughters but have had fertility problems with them. I have not seen to many bad OCC Legend calves, he sires alot of power as well as Missing Link. Seen a couple of Duff Encore calves that looked good.

We have a Duff New Attraction female in production.  She is an exceptional milker and raised a nice Grizzly bull calf this year.  Have a cow bred to Duff Hobart for next year.  Will continue to use the Duff Angus bulls in the future.

Big fan of NEW EDITION ,have a son for cleanup  out of DATELINE bred cow that has +4.00 birth EPD  an was named NO ASSISTTANCE ,USE ON Xbred,cHAROLAIS AN aNGUS heifers ,no problems,look to be exceptional females  out of all the different heifers we bred him to.....Seem to have explosive early growth an then  will proably mature quickier than most of our calves ...I say that cause that is  kinda what he did ,should have called him FIXER  because there are a lot of cattle that need to mature quikier than they do ,unless there terminal ....

We have had the best luck with New Edition and have several females in production.  Have a really nice Basic Instinct 2 year old female as well but haven't like the bulls out of him as much.  Anchor or Just Right are my favorite OCC bulls but New Edition is still the favorite overall.  Make sure you put him on something cleaner fronted and with a tick more frame...will moderate and add a little front end.

We used outer limits 2 or 3 years in a row really liked his calves had thickness and look with tons of body, if i had to fault him i'd say occasionally the calves were light boned but that could be the cow as well

Anyone else want to comment about the fertility issues if there are any? I was out looking @ club calves yesterday and in passing conversation a producer also mentioned fertility issues. Just wondering if it can be a real issue or if this is just an isolatedproblem. I personally would like to use some of their bulls to moderate and make my cows more efficient.

I have a few Anchor cows and their offspring in my herd.  I have had none of the fertility problems commonly mentioned when referring to Anchor bloodlines.  In fact, what I consider my best cow calved in July 3 years ago and is examined safe to an AI date for a March calf next spring.  They have been good cows for me.  I don't want to start anything but I sometimes get the feeling that something as difficult to prove as fertility is used by some to try and discredit OCC genetics and maybe even grass fed moderate cattle in general.

From just a #'s standpoint they look to downsize and be pasture working females ( good E.N. value).  They are below breed average for growth, FEED$, not good on Calving ease direct and maternal, bw epd.s aren't low either.  Good dociilty, HP (heifer pregnancy) is almost breed average, so they ought to be close to the angus's breed average on fertility.  New generation is low on scrotal (fertility).
I know nothing of these animals personally just looking at the #'s, they look to work very well on certain types of cattle and not so well on others.  JMO

I just had a couple loads of cows sired by OCC Paxton brought here to the farm from Oklahoma. They had been in severe drought this year as most know. The cows got here and didnt look like much but the calves were really good to my amazement. After watchin them get fat on grass for a month I have yet to see one cow come in heat and the calves have taken off. Paxton is a linebred bull but 4 generations away from 6807. Tim bought him back after a couple of years away. I know semen is available. The cows are plenty moderate for Ohio,some maybe to small, time will tell. I have to say thumbs up for me on the only OCC bull I have been around. I noticed they are not picky on what they eat. Even after being here awhile. They eat nettles, trees, old dormant grass, freshly mowed grass. They are always picking at something different. And there is lots of grass here. Kinda neat to watch. I think they will be very useful once we start are fall rotational grazing. I think I can make it on stockpiled fescue and corn stubble for quite a while

You might want to check me, but if I am not mistaken, OCC Paxton is like a 6 frame Ohlde bull!  Even if he isnt quite that big, he is still one of the bigger bulls to ever come out of that program.  Not that I am saying there isnt a place for 6 frame cattle, just he is an outlier for larger frame considering where he comes from.

You could be right. I will have to look. The cows grandsires are OCC bred as well. That could be why some are smaller I suppose. I could see him being a 6 frame tho. I just thought it was cool they all were actually bred coming out of that drought and in the shape they were in.

Any thoughts about OCC Picture Perfect. He is a bull that Sandeen's own, but that Tim recommended to me to take the place of Legend. Another bull that comes to mind for me is OCC Freestyle of Dean Kephart's. I have 3 first calf heifers that are doing a great job with their first calves, but I wouldn't exactly call them ground sows. Heavy milkers and great dispositions also.
