Melatonin dosage

I'm about 40 days out from show and not worried about hair.
What is the appropriate daily dosage for a 1250 pound steer that needs to calm down so daily care can be effective?
I can get 3, 5 and 10 MG tablets.

Order the imlants from the website that advertises on here.  In my opinion based on experience they work infinitely better than any other form of melatonin.  They get it straight to the bloodstream without having to go through the digestive process.

60 mgs per head/day to start with and adjust from there as needed.

The implant website indicates a dosage of 4 implants every 30 days.  Best results in 120 days.

Yes, I received your PM.  Thanks for the advice.

I had the steer on 100 mg/day for 3 days.  Last night after his rinse and walk, he got agitated and tried to stomp a mudhole in my ample belly so he's going to the locker as soon as I can get him in.

I have worked with him off and on since December.  He should be broke but will not tolerate anyone near his head.  I can stick him and scratch him about anywhere, but when I get near his head he will lay you out, even trying to do so through a fence. 

Yes, melatonin is supposed to calm the animal.  This one may not have had enough time for it to take effect.

Attitude effects for melatonin are varied.  Some it helps a lot, some are not as sensitive to it.  I've always been taught that edible forms of it take at least 30 days to have an effect on both hair or attitude.  Implants are faster and somewhat more predictable, but their effect does vary also.  I don't think its ever enough to eliminate "mean". Just makes some a little more relaxed.

So does that mean $80 per month???!!! Wow! Just to grow hair and calm them down? I think I will cull them and start over for that price.

I agree with you, im skeptical about it growing hair, but i have used it and it does work to help calm one down.

Melatonin implants aren't going to make a Brahman shaggy, but I'd wager there aren't many steers in the top 10 in exotic classes in Fort Worth that don't have a melatonin implant in their ear.  They make good haired calves even better. 

I'm not that much of a supplement fan and am generally skeptical about anything not made by a large company, but the implants work.  I use them on our Fort Worth calves and see the difference between the ones bred just like them that I don't use them that are headed to Houston.
