Nobody understands what knabe says.......you just nod yes. All areas aren't the same. Subsidizing corn....while pumping water out of High Plains aquifer is a interesting subject. If you stop pumping......our local economy would crash. Corn doesn't feed people directly. It does feed cattle and pigs and ethanol plants. Capitalizism isn't perfect.

In my area grass hay is higher per pound than corn, maybe we should plant some land back to grass.  I can by corn cheaper than I can raise it.

Sure they do. You just proved it.  More corn from less water. That’s capitalism.

That was the point of the link.

How is any of that sustainable? I guess just pump that baby dry. Then let the field tile drain it when it does rain because the soil isn’t capable of water retention. No soil aggregate equals no water retention. Field tile is addressing a symptom no different than the government paying out subsidies. I wonder what those farmers who cash those checks think about welfare recipients getting food stamps ?

Totally agree we produce more corn as the original poster mentioned. It’s like farmers have painted themselves in a corner. Corn and beans, maybe some wheat or get out of business. Get bigger or get out of business. Nothing will kill your chain saw engine faster than ethanol gas.

If you’re not born into an existing farm, good luck starting one. My story is long and full of train wrecks. Currently we are in the process of buying a farm. I’ve partnered up with two friends of mine who crop farm. Around 1500 acres. They have practiced no till since 1979. They are trying to incorporate cover crops now. Grazing crop residue is still not an option not grazing cover crops but it’s been discussed. I raise the hogs and cattle up to weaning, they go to one of my partners farms where he finishes them. The last few years they’ve grown non gmo beans and have had good results. Better yield than the RR ones. Corn has always been conventional. I have 17 sows here currently with around 100 piglets norm so far the last two weeks. Cows just started calving. We sell meat privately and to food trucks and chefs. We also sell at a farmers market in Columbus, Ohio. As far as my experience growing crops it would be limited. I ask lots of questions and mostly run the grain cart. Which is the most boring job in the history of jobs lol. The whole community I live in has maybe 10 families that still farm. Nobody has livestock anymore. You see some bigger crop guys putting in cafo barns for the manure. A few dairies still hanging on. Most are gone. Beef cows are small herds of mostly 4-h projects. No opportunity here for youth to break into Ag.

The article states the mutated ("bear claw") ears have 50% more kernels, but is doesn't address if the kernels are the same size. Or the fact that the cob is larger, retaining moisture longer, or that most of these ears don't have husk cover- so the tip kernels are damaged. These ear also do not shell as easy, as the cob is not round but more oval shaped.

The article would be better if it addressed yield per plant. Two nice round ears vs one odd ear.

The direction of seed companies is higher populations for higher yields. So you buy more seed.

E6, reading isn't your forte ehh. As I stated before.  Been practicing no till for many years only perform tillage in areas where its needed for certain reasons. Also been practicing cover crops for years, also much prefer using manure over any type of commercial fertilizer...why? Wait for it....it builds organic matter. I don't have a know it all attitude, a lot I don't know, but listening to guys like you who think they got it all figured out after a couple years really annoys me. Like I said do it full time for years and then come back to me with how much all your ideas work.

Also it's been a well known fact that non GMO beans out produce RR1 or 2s.

Every year is different and requires a different management technique not a one size fits all.

And to answer your question yes I did grow up milking cows and growing crops. Sorry you didn't, as you seem pretty bitter about it. But to be honest its no easier for me as it is you, at least you can get a first time farmer loan if you really wanted to take the plunge.

Not bitter at all. It’s just reality. You’ve been in farming your whole life. Hard to see it from an outsider looking in. I’m doing fine. Having fun figuring it out. I’m no expert at anything. Especially crops. I just know the current system isn’t sustainable nor needed. I’ve been farming one way or another for 20 years. How much longer do I have to put in before I can have an opinion? More info available now than ever before with lots of examples of folks figuring out better ways of doing things.

ELABORATE ON A "RIGHT TO COMMENT"-iS THIS GAINED BY: ACADEMIC PROWESS,A POLITICAL AFFILIATION, OR CASH AND CARRY?

appears to be arbitrary.

so what about the corn? pretty cool eh?

i think college grads, and some not college grads make the seed corn one plants.

perhaps you would rather they not have degrees for you to purchase their corn.

i'm not sure where your logic falls apart fastest.

some appear to want to rule on who can and who can't comment and the rules seem pretty complex, yet somehow inconsistent.

it reminds me of a tyrant. couldnt have posed the last sentence better myself-if this were a corn discussion gone political you have described in vivid detail a person who reverses his statements and actions on a dime, absolutely will not allow people to have thier own opinions, and is now jumping for attention and bursting at the seams about HIS WALL REJUVINATION (funded and approved by Obama) O0

Somethings never change! :)

This article is 3 years old, so how long before this gets on the market?

What should be the objective for land in this country?  Agriculture has over produced.  Corn, soybeans, cattle, pigs, chickens, etc. all are in excess right now.

dang phd's

cold spring harbor is a research laboratory, not really a place to take research to production.

I don’t think his post was directed at increasing yield to the US farmer, he was simply posting a link on how this science breakthrough could be exported to countries to increase corn production for feeding hungry people.

It’s a good debate and discussion. Is there any corn in production that is not produced in a lab.

As a citizen, should I be concerned about eating this corn?

It's important to remember that e6 is morally superior. For a year......he believed in the Golden Shower story. He pushed it for a year on facebook. When he found out that he was an idiot......he just dropped facebook. When you listen to a crusaders arguments......you need to be aware of the background of the story. It is a mission. A man that demands an audience. You just need to be aware of that personality type.

Lol. You love to use the catch phrase “morally superior”. Ok. I have no doubts Donnie has done all sorts of freaky shit with hookers from around the globe. He’s also a con artist and a tax cheat. More power to him. I dont like the guy. Never will. I liked Bernie. Probably vote for Andrew Yang this go round. What do you crusade for ? TH carriers? Roofless cars? The burger joint in eastern Colorado ? Shorthorn x red angus cross cattle? The Republican Party? Are you jealous Donnie got the golden shower instead of you? I bet you’d like some vodka and Russian hookers.

Trump porks two porn stars but a golden shower is out of the possibilities? Imagine if Obama had poured the coal to porn stars. The cries from folks like you would be heard from here to Okinawa. Fox News would need a full time preacher on set to keep the demons away.

But... the corn.

Where are all the post drift complainers.

Corn is yellow, the golden shower is yellow.

Bathhouse, golden shower. Both pointless.

The real golden shower is less ground water usage for more yields

The bull is AF SL Sure Thing, reg# 4143549. Bought him from Robert Alden back in 2009. His ASA EPDs don't look the best, but I only registered 10, used him on some commercial cows and they fed out well. I was feeding a bull for the Big Bull contest at the ISF, the two bulls got together, and tore a tendon in Sure Thing's rear leg. I only got two breeding seasons out of him, but I did freeze a lot of semen. He is a Trump x Mirage.
