As soon as possible, maybe try it on him first while he is tied up.

First start by rubbing his back with it then move to his brisket and finally his stomach.

Sometimes when you first use it on their stomach they jump and I don't want him to get away from you so that's why I mentioned using it on him while tied up.

Okay I have a show stick and it is smooth and not as pointy as my friends, I used it a few times and he liked it, practically drooling over it. lol.  Thanks allot every one.

i introduce the show stick before the halter. I put them in a pen and and scratch them till the stop moving realizing that it feels super good being scratch on the belly. they associate u with the scratching and a friendship starts..................

I have been doing this to my new steer and it works very nicely...he is also noticing the food comes from me!

this is how a break all my calves sometimes i even brush them before a put a halter.I like handing feeding them  ranch cubes. i always said give me a show stick and a bag a ranch cubes and 2 weeks and the calve with pretty much broke.  (lol)

Contact your local large animal veterinarian, ask him about setting up an innoculation schedule (some areas are deficient in minerals and animals need specific shots ie BOSE), contact your 4h/ffa advisor about questions when it comes to breaking the calf, contact local kids that do well and ask them about clipping/fitting, basic husbandry..............we can give you all the advice in the world, but we do not know the true situation and people who are present can be more beneficial. I would recommend this website to someone with a second or third year calf, who already has the basic first hand knowledge and is just looking to improve their knowledge base. If you truly want to do your best, at least call the veterinarian.
