Lincoln, Nebraska is no better, most of the steers at the animal science department that are on feeding trial are county fair steers and state fair steers, so pretty gentle, i remember a few years ago one got out in the middle of the night and started grazing in some peoples yard north of East campus, police were called and animal control too, they attempted to herd the animal with lights and sirens to a chain linked yard, at this time one of my friend got a call of an crazy cow causing mayham and destruction, he roles out of bed ( like 3 am) and heads out to investigate, well by the time he got their the cops had shot the steer ( he was going to market in about 10 days ) . the police stated that the steer had attempted to harm them by ramming their police vehicles and posed a threat to other motorist..... the kicker is that he was in the grassy area the rodeo team rides horses at... and this steer was used the 2 week before for the Block and Bridle showmanship contest. all someone needed to do was grab a bucket of feed and i bet he would have been caught.....
i wish any 4-H, FFA members, or anyone that has cattle experience to tell law enforcement how to control a situation with loose livestock, just close off the area and to not chase, police and official are idiots when it come to situations like this, and maybe this could have ended differently, the dairy cow at California state fair probably would have been caught up when she got hungry/thirsty- JMO
