N/C goat registration

Saw a sale with some nice looking does but they sell without papers. Is there a market for non papered goats? Can you register offspring out of these does bred to a registered buck? If you were just starting would papered be the only way to go or is thins something to work around? Are these selling for market shows only?

you can  register offspring out of non registered stock as long as the buck has papers . and as far is papered the way to go depends on what route you want to go ?

Try this link for the specifics on what is acceptable for producing percentage kids for the ABGA.    http://www.abga.org/page.php?pageid=7 If you have more questions, I would call the American Boer Goat Association office. We started raising purebred breeding stock about 5 years ago, and found the ABGA really great to work with. As with other species, if you plan to show the offspring, the fine print on show eligibility by parentage can be the kicker. As far as if it is worth it to register from the start, I would say yes whenever possible. It sucks when you are a few years into something like this and you start to have really great stock and get recognition and could get quite a bit more money than market if you had just put in the extra effort in the beginning. Even if all you plan to do is sell market animals, I would say start out with at least a percentage female base-you never know where you could end up in the grand scheme of things. It all depends where your goals are.  If it's breeding stock, they have to be registered.  If you are going to play in the wether game, papers aren't really worth much.  Just ask Mike Kelly or Douglas Bean how much not having papers have hurt him and his breeding stock sales in the past decade.  There are as many high-selling wether stock animals now as in the fullblood deal.  Off the top of my head I know 7+ bucks over $20,000 in the past 8 months that aren't registered.  I can't find half that many that were registered that passed that mark.

It definately depends on where you are wanting to market them, and if your showing wethers or breeding stock.  Yes kids can be registered out of unreistered does and registered bucks, but if I am not mistaken the buck would have to be a fullblood in that scenario.  There is definately a market for unregistered meat goats both in and out of the show ring at the moment as well.  One of the best kids we showed last year was a Heinz 57, but he did good all year.  Also, meat goats are doing pretty good at the sale barns around here lately.  They were averaging close to $2.00 a pound on saturday.
