The 16th Annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic kicked off the week with a Working Dogs Sale.  The standing-room-only crowd removed their hats for a moment of silence to honor the late auctioneer, Stanley Stout.  The auctioneer, Seth Weichaar, then began the sale with the Supreme Champion Working Dog, consigned by Gerald Henzler.  The Supreme Champion Dog sold for $2,800 to Mick Jameson of Minden, NE. 

Reserve Champion Working Dog, consigned by Ruby Starke sold for $1,800 to Mark Gall of Clarkson, NE.  4th Place Working Dog and Overall High-Selling Dog, consigned by Tim Gifford, sold for $3,100 to Barton Wherritt of Custer City, OK.  5th Place Working Dog, consigned by Owen Seamann sold for $1,750 to Neal Hansen of Denver, CO.  6th Place Working Dog, consigned by Reich Ranch, sold for $1,700 to Darren Stevenson of Cairo, NE.  7th Place Working Dog, consigned by Preston Neugebauer, sold for $2,000 to Tangy Bates.

The Ranch Horse Sale immediately followed the Working Dogs Sale.  Everyone was on the edge of their seats when they finally announced the Supreme Champion Horse was consigned by Matt Wilken, Bertrand, NE.  The Supreme Champion Horse sold for $6,400 to Doug Fahrenbruch, Bertrand, NE.  The High Selling Horse of the night was consigned by Hilltop Ranch and sold for $7,100 to Allan Arp, Kennard, NE.  The average sale price of the night for horses was $3,370.

The night ended as the arena slowly cleared out.  Everyone went home to rest up for the next day’s events which includes the Hereford Show starting at 8:00 a.m. followed by the Polled Hereford Show at 9:30 a.m. and the Red Angus Show at 11:00 a.m.  Following the shows the Hereford Sale will begin at 12:30 p.m., the Polled Hereford Sale at 2:00 p.m. and the Red Angus Sale at 3:00 p.m.  The finale to Wednesday will be a Cattlemen’s Social in the Expo Center at 5:00 p.m.

The beautiful weather brought a good crowd to the second day at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic.  The Horned Herefords led of the day’s sales as Intervet and Genex presented the awards.  The auctioneer, Jim Birdwell, started with the Supreme Champion Hereford Bull consigned by Diamond Ring Ranch.  The Supreme Champion Horned Hereford Bull sold for $1,900 to Dan Larington of Indianola, NE.  Supreme Champion Horned Hereford Heifer consigned by Rutt Herefords sold for $2,700 to Ashley Laible of Bloomfield, NE.  Reserve Champion Horned Hereford Bull consigned by 7 Mill Iron Ranch sold for $2,500 to A & B Callte.  Reserve Champion Horned Hereford Heifer consigned by Jones Herefords sold for $1,150 to Southeast Community College.  The average sale price for the Horned Hereford Bulls was $2,201 and the average sale price for the Horned Hereford Heifers was $1,722.  The overall sale price average was $2,112.  The high selling Horned Hereford consigned by Nelson Herefords sold for $5,200 to Rausch Herefords of Reva, SD.

The Polled Herefords immediately followed the Horned Herefords as the crowed continued to grow throughout the day.  The Supreme Champion Polled Hereford Bull consigned by Jenson Bros led off the day.  The Supreme Champion Polled Hereford Bull, as well as the High Selling Polled Hereford sold for $8,500 to J-6 Inc, Gibbon, NE.  Supreme Champion Polled Hereford Heifer consigned by Valley Creek Ranch/Schutte & Sons sold for $8,200 to Willow Creek Farms of Water Town, SD.  Reserve Champion Polled Hereford Bull consigned by Valley Creek Ranch sold for $3,700 to Harry Slawnyk of Utica, NE.  Reserve Champion Polled Hereford Heifer consigned by Jensen Bros sold for $4,300 to Eric Gabel of Fort Morgan, CO.  The sale average of the night for the Polled Hereford Heifers was $3,094 and the sale average for the Polled Hereford Bulls was $2,893.  The overall average for the Polled Hereford breed was $2,950.

The Red Angus Sale brought a good end to a good day at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic.  The Supreme Champion Red Angus Bull consigned by Solution Genetics sold for $3,400 to Black Hereford Ranch of Crawford, OK.  Supreme Champion Red Angus Heifer consigned by Solution Genetics/Sandpoint Cattle Co. sold for $4,700 to Gerald Lewis of Gilbert, AZ.  Reserve Champion Red Angus Bull consigned by Solution Genetics sold for $2,700 to Yancy Sower of Oberlin, KS.  Reserve Champion Red Angus Heifer consigned by Solution Genetics/ Sandpoint Cattle Co. sold for $3,600 to Rodney Fulton of Lexington, NC.  The High Selling Red Angus was consigned by Nolin Red Angus sold for $5,000 to Mathes Farms of Unionville, MO.  The average sale price for the Red Angus Heifers was $1,966 and the average sale price for the Red Angus Bulls was $2,131.  The overall sale average for the Red Angus was $2,052.

The Cattlemen ended their day with the Cattlemen’s Social located in the Expo Center, sponsored by AllTech.  The next day would be a big day and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic.  Thursday’s events will start off with the Angus Show at 8:00 a.m., followed by the Simmental Show at 10:00 a.m., the Charolais Show at 11:00 a.m., and the Braunvieh Show at 12:00 p.m.  The Angus Sale will start at 1:00 p.m., followed by the Simmental Sale at 2:30 p.m., the Charolais Sale at 3:00 p.m., and the Braunvieh Sale at 4:30 p.m.  The All American Balancer Futurity will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Genex and Intervert Social, the Royal Ice Sale in the Sale arena, and the Prime Rib Dinner in the Classic Barn at 7:30 p.m.

A warm day brought out the Angus enthusiasts as the seats were packed as the Angus sale began on Thursday afternoon.  Bidders and buyers were pleased with the tremendous offering from the Angus exhibitors.

Grand Champion Angus bull consigned by Willers Mitten Brand, Stanton, NE sold for $4,100 to Richard Moomey, Sumner, NE.

Grand Champion Angus heifer consigned by Sand Dune Cattle Co. LLC, Sargent, NE sold for $4,750 to Promised Land Livestock, Bassett, NE.

Reserve Champion Angus bull consigned by Pohlman Angus, Norfolk, NE sold for $4,100 to Mr. K Angus, Clarks, NE.

Reserve Champion Angus heifer consigned by MGS Angus, Genoa, NE sold for $3,800 to Loren Trauernicht, Wymore, NE.

The High-Selling Angus bull was consigned by A&B Cattle, Bassett, NE and sold for $6,900 to Wyatt Kile of Red Cloud, NE.

The high-selling Angus female was consigned by 5H Angus, Oakland, NE, and sold for $6,500 to Scott Schrauner, Elkhart, KS.

The average sale price of Angus heifers was $2,553 and the average sale price for the Angus bulls was $3,169.  The average overall sale price for the Angus breed was $2,977.

The Simmental exhibitors brought a stout set of bulls and females for the crowd to view and to select for their purchases.  The buyers were not afraid to raise their hands in the air as the sale began.

Grand Champion and High-Selling Simmental Bull was consigned by Suver Simmentals, Arlington, NE, and sold for $6,500 to Steve Hanson, Hanson Farms, Elsie, NE.

Grand Champion Simmental Heifer consigned by Vogt Farm, Elmwood, NE, sold for $4,200 to Wulf and Snell of Guide Rock, NE.

Reserve Champion Simmental Bull consigned by Forster Simmental, Smithfield, N, sold for $5,600 to Mackley Simmentals, Arnold, NE

Reserve Champion Simmental Heifer consigned by Forster Simmental, Smithfield, NE, sold for $4,100 to Triangle J Ranch, Miller, NE.

The average sale price for the Simmental heifers for the afternoon was $1,947 and the average sale price for the Simmental bulls was $2,266.  The overall average sale price for the Simmental breed was $2,111.

The Charolais lots offered for this year’s sale to the buyers and bidders were certainly a stout set of females and bulls. The averages for this sale were truly an indication of the quality of Charolais offered this year.

Grand Champion and High-Selling Charolais Bull was consigned by Morgan Cattle Co., Greeley, CO, and sold for $6,750 to Wooden Cross Cattle of Hillsboro, KS.

Grand Champion Charolais Heifer consigned by West Fork Ranch, Loup City, NE, sold for $3,900 to Bremer Farms, St. Edward, NE.

Reserve Champion Charolais Bull consigned by Tom Sonderup/Dale Funk, Omaha, NE, sold for $6,000 to Darren Cook.

Reserve Champion Charolais Heifer consigned by P&W Cattle Co., Canton, TX, sold for $1,950 to Dean Weber, Wagner, SD.

The Charolais heifer sale average of the afternoon was $1,911 and the Charolais bull sale averaged $2,664.  The overall average for the Charolais lots was $2,458.

As the beautiful afternoon came to a close, the Braunvieh sale proved to be the culmination of a great day of cattle sales at the 2007 NE Cattlemen’s Classic.

Grand Champion Braunvieh Bull consigned by Leland Nelson, Norfolk, NE sold for $1,900.

Grand Champion Braunvieh Heifer consigned by Thernes Braunvieh, DeWitt, NE, sold for $1,600 to Woodring Ranch, Flint, TX.

Reserve Champion Braunvieh Bull consigned by Blue Feather Ranch, Kiowa, CO, sold for $1,750 to Jimmy Jack Biffle of Wuenster, TX.

Reserve Champion Braunvieh Heifer consigned by Thernes Braunvieh, DeWitt, NE, sold for $2,600 to Michael Long, Ulysses, NE.

The high-selling Braunvieh female of the day was consigned by Thernes Braunvieh and sold for $4,100 to Traci Eggleston of King City, CA.

The high-selling Braunvieh bull of the day was consigned by Cornerstone Cattle Ranch, Diller, NE, and sold for $2,500 to Jimmy Jack Biffle of Wuenster, TX.

The Braunvieh heifer sale average for the afternoon was $1,946 and the Braunvieh bull sale average was $1,772.  The overall sale average for the Braunvieh breed was $1,878.

Following the Braunvieh Sale, the first All-American Balancer Futurity Event was held with a standing-room only crowd where futurity members cast their vote for the All-American Balancer Bull.

The evening featured a prime rib dinner served by a Supreme Sponsor, Famous Dave’s and Applebee’s.  The temperature continued to rise as the Classic kicked off the 2nd Annual Royal Ice Sale. 41 outstanding lots of embryos, flushes and semen were offered to the robust crowd.

The overall high-selling lot and the top flush lot for the night was consigned by Paul & Christine Miller, M Lazy Heart Ranch, Torrington, WY, and sold for $6,700 to Bryan Rice, Morrill, NE. 

The high selling embryo lot was consigned by Bryce Franzen, Brady, NE, and sold for $4,000 to Guide Rock Ranch Angus, Hastings, NE.

The second high-selling embryo lot was consigned by KOLT Cattle Co., Nate Kolterman, Seward, NE, and sold for $3,300 to Chad Hirschfeld, Benedict, NE.

The second high-selling flush lot was consigned by Ehlers Cattle Co., Allen Ehlers, York, NE, and sold for $2,700 to Scott Heinrich, Hickman, NE.

The high-selling semen lot was consigned by Lyle Borg, Allen, NE, and sold for $500 to Brandon and Kami Meyer, Blue Hill, NE.

Grand Champion Limousin Heifer consigned by Cash Schilling, Schilling Cattle Company of Edson, KS, and sold for $2,150 to Jeff Richter, Richter Limousin of Kearney, NE.

Consignor’s Choice Reserve Champion Pen of 5 was awarded to Ralph Pilkington, Pilkington Cattle, Albion, NE.

The winner of the use of a cattle shelter for one year was Jacob Miller, of Culbertson, NE. The cattle shelter was provided by H & L Quality Buildings, Inc.
