We have my son's show steer and are not sure how to classify him.  He is from Tiger Woods and supposedly out of a hereford cross cow.  We classed him ourselves as a red cross in the first show we took him to and obviously it was the wrong class.  We showed against some Limi's.  Any help would be appreciated.  We are newbies at this.  Our show is in February and he weighs 922 in these pictures which were taken beginning of September.  Poor guy has NO hair.  He came from up north and I guess this Texas heat has taken his hair.  We are rinsing and he is under fans.

No help here for classification,  but it looks like Walker thinks he is "first class"!  Nice steer for a young boy!

Most Texas jackpot shows have American, British and AOB.  Show in British.

Select Shorthorn If your showing in TJLA, you can pick your class.  If you go to Majors, class under shorthorn on your class card.  They can always move him out to Red Cross if judges want, but make them decide.

I don't think that calf is classing shorthorn unless it's a show you class yourself- and even in that case I don't think his body style will fit the class well enough to permit him to go high. If I was classing him by myself for a jackpot show he would show simmental, if I had to run him to a panel of judges I would try to get him in the maines his head looks more Maine style than shorthorn - keep in mind I know you shorthorn people wear feelings on your sleeves I'm just talking about how the steers classing in Tx generally look not off the official breed standards

Your boy is cute as hell by the way and looks like he's having fun!!  <beer>

Right on the money..... I'd run him Simmi if you class yourself or Maine if they're doing it.

That's the beauty (or curse for some folks) of showing here. You can have a great steer and run him in several breeds until you find the one where he is the most successful.

Good advise running Simi, I can see that in the Majors.  British division may be the best bet at county with only three.  AOB in Texas is tough!

Thank you everybody for the input.  Walker totally loves his steer!  Hokey is a pretty gentle steer and may not be the best "show steer" on the market, but he is a great steer for my boy!  First show and he was the only steer in his class, so he got "1st place".  Didn't place in the drive!  (thumbsup)

We only have the 3 breeds classification at county, so British here he comes.  The majors is what I am worried about.  (Granted if he sold at county it wouldn't hurt my feelings!) I am worried about the shows that we have to classify and then run by a panel.  We are showing him at Heart of Texas.

Simmi - Maine - Shorthorn
Can we take a poll?

Like I said previously the cattle that are actually shorthorn vs the steers that are in the shorthorn breed in Tx aren't the same pattern. They're small headed compact clubbed up really hard things I just feel like although the steer looks shorthorn by the book in my opinion he is more "out of the box" as a shorthorn in Tx than as a Maine. Not to mention his color may be too painted and not "broken" enough to confidently get in. As far as classing simmy they want the paint to be symmetrical on both sides generally so I couldn't say for sure he classes there. He will class Maine I feel like the easiest and that's what I'd run him in Waco. The folks classing there will do a lot better job with advice seeing him in person than we can give from pics. Can he class shorty? Yes. No doubt he can, but if you told me he got kicked for his pattern being too much paint and not broken enough you wouldn't get an argument from me

Whatever he shows as hes a pretty big oldschooll looking steer-he wont run with the black derivations and doesnt look much like them.Looks closer to a fullblood maine or maybe a Shorthorn with some Red Demand or something back there. 20 plus years ago-he could have come right out of Harold Hoskins lot. Can we take a poll?

That's the order I'd go with.
