Nephews cheap fair steer...thoughts?

here is our effort for the local county fair...we intentionally don't spend a bunch on his steers but like to get them to their full potiental.  What do ya think?

In my opinion he is a good solid steer.I have a clubby shorthorn steer myself who looks very similar. He's deep bodied, that shows muscle definition through the lower part of his quarter that carries down ino his stifle. He's very extented through his neck and shoulder and doesn't have a lot of wastiness about his brisket. If I could change him I would want him a little deeper out of his flank and I would want to put more weight on him to give him a softer, soggier appearance. Good luck with him!

I think he is a super nice steer for a "cheap fair steer".  From the ground up he is wide based with his feet bein out on the corners where they need to be, big boned, got plenty of natural thickness, and is level and balanced throughout.  Also looks like he is really long spined.  If I have to get critical on him I would like to give him some more depth through the middle.  But I think you should be very proud of the job you have done with this steer.

He has all the right parts, how is he when he's on the move? Id say he can hold his own in a shorthorn division. Is your fair pretty competitive?

On the move he is very sound.  Moves out really well...I wish our heifer moved out as nice!  And our fair just lumps everybody together, and I bet he will be nearly the only shorty (if not THE only)!  And competive?  Well, IMO about half try really hard...and the other half...you know how that goes.  We just love to show up with our clearance rack calf and get some looks 

He is a Dr. Who calf and his full brother last year was a real popper, but we didn't want to spend the $$ they wanted for him. But for some reason my good friend that we got him off of gave us him this year for a DEAL.

I think he looks real good for this stage of the game-If you try to puton too much fat fast-he may get somewhat patchy around his pins and briscuit-llegitimate good calf-without alot of hair hiding things to me O0

I am not sure, to be honest.  I didn't see him on the cow.  I will have to ask my buddy ;D  When we went to pick him out, he had about 8 nice black calves, a SUPER nice red calf (we couldn't afford-lol) and this spotted calf.  My nephew took ONE look at the pen and his shopping was done.  I want the red calf.  Ha ha.  He loves color.  But he has turned out really well-I think I might be getting better at feeding them!

What's a deal price$$?  I always find it interesting those that can price calves - meaning those that are good at calling the sale price before they sell .  I haven't seen enough club calves sell to know a $1500 calf from a $2000 from a $3500 from a $5000 calf.

Well maybe I'm not sure what a deal price is...is $800 a deal? That's what we paid. Seems like every steer he has already looked at this year from other folks (not my friend) have been starting at $1200. For our dinky little fair it is just a waste IMO. Thank goodness my parents don't make him pay for his feed...last year he would have profited about $200 for a years worth of work.  My nephew works pretty hard on his calves so grandma and grandpa pick up the calf and the feed bill. (yes he is spoiled and we are ok with that!)

But my absolute favorite part is being proud of a calf that wasn't bought as a guaranteed competitor. Monte may not be the best in the barn, but I would hate to look at him after a years worth of work and think...I wish  we would have tried harder or thought he wasnt all he could be.

Now you have me wondering...did we really get a deal? I still kinda think yes.  If not, he is my friend (I introduced him to his wife!) and we will probably be buying from him again this fall
