We recently bought a smokey heifer out of the Share The brand Sale. We usually don't raise true cross breds so this is something new for us as we raise mainly shorthorns. So just asking opinions, we are getting ready to AI and just wondering what ppl might bred her too. She is a Yellow Jacket X Smokin Bob this will be for her second calve. Breeding for steers mainly but if get heifer we wouldn't mind. Like i said just something new for us. TIA

Go through some catalogs, list what people have used on similar backgrounds.

Then call distributor and ask their opinion and if it doesn’t match, ask them why, is there a new direction not yet in print people are going w new bulls?

Can you put up a pic of her?  We used Smokin Bob a couple of times.  We had a dinky heifer out of a huge Irish Whiskey cow - had to C-section a 65# angus-sired calf out of the heifer - she had a pelvis the size of a walnut and a wide pin set.  Same year had a giant steer (needed to be 1600# to finish) out of a very moderate framed Northern Improvement x Maine cow.  Started using the Business Done Right / IGWT cattle after that and the calves have been more consistent. To avoid rat tails, you might want to breed to a red bull or at least a red carrier.

Here is a picture I was trying to find one. We know she is a little more steery but  kinda what we wanted for a steer momma.  Defect wise not sure we sent off test but have not got results back yet, but with that being said just looking at her I would say she is probably  th carrier. not very big framed. Her first calf was born Aug. 5th came super easy 60#er.

I would use a clean pb shorthorn or charolais on her for 2nd calf.

The best purebred beefmaster bull there is check out emmons website for more pics and progeny. May not be as show heifer type as the Hollywood stuff but they are made to where they can make steers
