We were showing back when the switch occurred. Right beforehand, things had gotten a little ridiculous with the way the calves would be done up at our majors, especially Houston when a lot of calves had already started shedding out. Some of the twine jobs on winning calveswere pretty bad. The ag teachers had a lot to do with our rule switch - they were really raising cain about the fitters.
There were a lot of people that thought it would really even out the playing field. A lot of kids that just show up and feed thought they would have a chance. They were wrong. You can't get around putting in the time. Thank goodness.
I liked the show better with hair, but even though we put in hard work on ours, we started doing better in the slick shows than we did with hair at the majors. Still do. We had the Champion Maine steer the first year Houston went slick. But that same calf was the Reserve Maine with hair at the fall classic the year before.
Same kids and same calves still win for the most part - hair or not. The price on the best ones that will slick has gone up a lot. Colored calves have somewhat of an advantage in the slick show. The muscle just shows up better.
