We have a 10 month old beefmaster heifer that we just can’t get to consume enough grain. We feed a show mix from a local feed store that is very popular. We can only get her to consume 12lbs a day & that does not happen every day. Here is what we do.
6lbs of feed plus sure champ at 5:30am pulled up after 1 hour. She never hardly eats any of it, maybe 2lbs. Whatever is left over I pull up and feed to her at 5:30 pm along with her 6lb evening ration, so approximately 10 lbs total at night, and she almost finishes every bit but sometimes has two large handfuls or so left over. Then I give her free choice hay (Costal) all night. I don't think she is filling up on hay because there is a lot left over most mornings but I could be wrong.
She is fed with another cow separated by a corral but right in front of one another. I give her 1 hour to eat then pull up feed and release her out of the corral. They are only allowed free choice hay at night after feeding. She gets Probio powder over every meal & we have also tried the Probio paste. I have tried VitaCharge paste as well. She has access to loose minerals, and block minerals along with a salt block and a protein tub. We have tried B-12 & also pouring in a little molasses over her food. I have tried mixing in Pre-Con. I feel like I have tried everything but I just don’t know why she does not hardly eat at all in the mornings. We have to make her get up to come to the feeder because she is just not interested but at night comes running. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
