We will have about 220 calves, unless I get the 50- 60 cows sold that I was hoping to sell before Christmas sold in February. These are commercial cows but all the bred cow sales in December were packed full when I tried to book mine in November. Lots of people up here sick of being sliced and diced a hundred different ways in the commercial markets. In my case, I am getting tired of it as well. I sold 3 heifer calves, 3 bred heifers, 1 pregnancy, along with 2 flushes, in a purebred sale last fall and got more for them than I received for 61 commercial calves. My embryo sales were triple what my commercial calves brought in.l One of my neighbours told me he sold his calves last fall and just got enough money to make his tractor and baler payment. Nothing more for the hundred other expenses in this business. I keep thinking that some day we, as food producers, will be appreciated.
That said, I am looking forward to a new set of calves. We start with a set of ET calves around Feb 1. Another set in mid Feb. AI calves start also in mid Feb. We synchronized a set of cows and heifers to calves in late Feb, and turned out 6 bulls on the same day, so things could get interesting in late Feb. There is something about calving time that gets a guy excited again.
