Ok, shorthorn experts... I'm reading a biography of Grover Cleveland, and in it, it talks about Grover's uncle, Lewis F. Allen, and how he was a shorthorn breeder. A quick google search did have Lewis Allen show up in some old shorthorn herd books and it looks like he may have even authored a book on shorthorn lineage. I was wondering if any of you guys had any knowledge of this. I was curious if anything from his line is around today. Thanks in advance!

Lewis Allen gathered up the original  US Shorthorn pedigrees that traced to the Coates herdbook in England and recorded and kept records of the offspring and published the herdbooks until they were sold in the early 1880'S to the newly formed American Shorthorn Breeders Association.

I found a website that will let you download the book that Lewis Falley Allen wrote, "History of the Short-Horns" 1872. It's 300 pages but is pretty interesting and detailed.

I own 2 copies of that book!!! Every shorthorn breeder should read it do their best to understand it and try to model their programs after the forefathers of the shorthorn breed  that are in the book! They were some very talented men!

A copy of that book sells this Saturday at the Keystone Autumn Klassic Shorthorn Cattle Sale. You could call Brent Elam

I have 2 books both have alot of old photos and some paintings-renditions-50 Years among Shorthorns by Robert Bruce who talks about the first cattle he saw from 1845 on  and pretty much all the shorthorn breeders starting with Booth there are some of the first photo graveurs of Shorthorns ever published in this book  Shorthorn Cattle by Alvin Sanders CA 1908 which is 1000 pages long and covers both the beef and dual cattle The pictures of those big stout milkers that were way thicker than anything ive seen other than beef friesens make the frail milkers of today look like deer and are the link to some of the last of their kind in the US (maybe anywhere that I know of )-the Haumont cattle O0

Under the Shorthorn Information section of the Heritage Shorthorn Society website (www.heritageshorthorn.org) there is a comprehensive detailed list of Shorthorn reference books.  Many of these books occaisionaly come up for sale on eBay.  The Heritage Shorthorn Society is constantly adding information to its website and is an excellent place to find historical information on Shorthorns.

I agree with some of the others.  It is a must read book to follow the history of the breed.  I think I have 2 books by him.

The Heritage Shorthorn Society has received a donation of books authored by Otis L. Fisher from his daughter Susan Cromer.  These are not reprints.  They are brand new original 1993 books that she had stored.  The books are "Shorthorns Around the World" and "The Story of the Milking Shorthorn in the U.S.".  They are available at a very reasonable price in the Store section of the Heritage Shorthorn Society: www.heritageshorthorn.org/store.

Otis fisher- that’s a name haven’t heard in a while.  Attempted to contact him for awhile trying to buy the RC prefix. No luck finding anyone.  History of short-horns is a good read-
