I think it is really unfortunate that folks feel the need to be so crtical. If you don't like the heifer then say I don't like her and let it go. But posting    symbols like ... to bring the post back to the top and the hamburger commments are pretty lame. IF you ain't payin the feed bills then it isn't any skin off your nose if he keeps her or not. Why make this so personal?

I have seen some of the best cattle in some of the worst pictures. Like I said, take the time to get a good picture.

There are a lot more heifers that won't make show heifers in the world than vice versa. If you want to show her, show her and you will get the most genetic potential out of her just by having her on feed. If she was mine I would bred her to a calving ease bull for a good feeder calf then use her for a recip the next go around. Good solid cows can make you $ as a recip even if they will not put a show heifer on the ground naturally.

100 Million: Your comments on the heifer are plain out rude and childish! If your gonna make remarks like you did, keep them to yourself. What kind of cattle do you raise? Have you ever raised anything significant? Or do you just sit at your computer and bash other people's cattle? There comes a point when enough is enough and you move on instead of making rude comments like you did. Someone simply asked an opinion on their heifer, they did not ask to be put down by someone who probably has no idea what their talking about in the first place.

I want to say I am sorry for my rude comment.

All SD'ers I want to say I am sorry for my rude comment.

I would like to say I need to learn to be alittle more polite and politicial correct about how i say and what I say about rating calfs.

I ALWAYS tell it like I see it and I dont ever say Nice calf or gratz or way to go when I dont mean it.  I WOULD WANT THE SAME FOR SOMEONE TELLING ME ABOUT MY CALVES, I would not want someone to say nice calf when it is not.... I really think THIS...If we can help others out on what is good and what is bad without being RUDE...ALL SD'ers would learn ALOT MORE on what is good and what is BAD about a calf, But we all want to be politicial correct and not hurt peoples feelings.  WE all know how good this calf is but sometimes we reserve to say what we mean, just to not hurt them

I think a better way to say it is this......

" I like this about this or I like that about this..... Not THIS CALF SUCKS"

So I am sorry

And About the hair cut ...I just think if we are going to ask WHAT DO U THINK you should at least make it look its best WASH, CLIP, LIGHTING, POSE, ETC.... you will get a lot more REAL FACTS about the truth about the calf if you just take a little time to.  We all know that you dont need a hair cut to tell how good and calf is BUT when you only have one 2d pictures,..... I would want to show everone the best I can do.

100, I  am going to guess that you show cattle, so you had to have seen the situation where there is 1 or 2 good calves in a class and 3 or 4 poor calves. The judges can get their point across about each calf without telling the kids that their cattle suck. when you are giving opinions on a calf give reasons just like you are judging.
"Lacks this or that "
"to much of this or that"
"Not my kind of calf"
"I would like to see this or that in the animal"

You can convey your point without looking like a what ever.
We all have our opinions, you just need to learn to express them in a more subtle way. It does take a big person to apologize and you did that, just thank about your comments before you write them next time.

Beattie, I think you  should remember the comments made by some of us that gave you positive comments. You can learn alot by posting about questions you have weather they are about calf opinions or something else. I'm sure you have learned from this experience that better picture taking is required. Please continue to post.

It is hard to get a real good idea on either. The roan heifer looks like she has some extension to her front, some width and depth. I can not tell by the angles of the pictures if she has any length. The black heifer looks a little smaller boned and narrower made in the pictures.

My questions to you are,
Did the calf come easy?
Did the cow have plenty of milk and is she an easy keeper?
Is the calf better than her mom?
Is the heifer an easy keeper?
Does the heifer have a good disposition?
Is the heifer taking you in the direction you want your cattle to go?

If the answers to all these questions are yes than you should consider her as a replacement.
If you answered no to any of these questions, you should ship her or sell her.

Okay here is my problem. We all just told you it takes time to get good pictures. It took me a month and many hours to get pictures of my twins that I posted on here. I wasn't even happy with the one's I had. Now, you took two hours and snapped pics in the mud. Let the heifer run with momma in the pasture if you have to. I understand your excitement to get them out here for evaluation but your pictures are all we have to go by. Take some time and get a five gallon bucket and sit with your camera. If you drink coffee it is my one vice, get a cup and drink it and just watch for great shots with good angles. It may take an entire day of snapping photos. It comes with time and patience.
The two photos you have seem to have the basic structure needed but some of the questions VC asked or posted are totally appropriate when considering replcement females. THe cow is half of your equation when thinking about productivity of your future females. Take it all in stride.

Well, I have to say, don't take "negative" comments and throw them out. You can't get ticked when someone, not matter how nicely, tells you your cow/heifer ain't so good. I post that as I have had it happen in real life, not just from a pic on a board. When someone dislikes an animal, you can't simply state "Well, you don't know what I'm doing, and what I know, so I won't listen." That's just plain stupid. Sure, take criticism with a grain of salt depending on who it comes from, but don't get this idea that your calf is really great because some people agreed with you. Although pictures may make a calf not look as they do in person, they give a good idea about the animal. So far, I would not use those females as replacements; show, commercial, or otherwise. You can't over look at least some degree of quality because you aren't making club calves. However, if you had listened to your own advice in the first place, you wouldn't have wasted your time posting pictures and ASKING for more feedback.

Edited to say: Although, the red one has the most brood cow potential of the three. She is probably the best built heifer with some muscle and rib.

MYT, I believe they meant the derogatory pointless "turn it into hamburger" type comments that gave no real feedback or reason for not keeping the heifer.
I do not agree with you on the pictures either, a bad picture will tell you nothing about the animal but maybe the color. Angles, lighting, slope of the land can distort the subject way to much to get fair evaluation of the animal. A bad picture can make a good calf look terrible and a great picture can make a bad calf look good.

Beattie clubcalves, I know a couple of months ago there was a video posted that explained in depth the process and reasons for taking a good picture, maybee someone else remembers it and could help you find it. It might help you with future pictures.
We at least need a good rear shot and a profile shot to form an honest opinion of your animals, and some times it might take a couple of these.

Honestly I think that if you don't have to decide right away, I think that I would feed these 3 heifers and try to let them express themselves a little. They all appear to be green in their  condition. Of coarse I like to try to breed all the heifers we have to see if I can make them better. Actually, the better the cattle are the harder it is to make them "better". Get one more heifer up Beattie and we could judge them for you with critiques.

Hey CAB, i think you should opine on this a little bit.  the issue i see, is what to match with the worse they are to get something in the middle, which skews your positive results, which suggest buy better cattle initially and breed type to type and pay close attention to deviations/improvements.

i would say for me at least, that as a pedigree breeder/multiplier for the most part, and mostly interested in recovering things without things and then fix it.

I completely agree with everyones comments on taking a good picture.  One of the quickest ways to lose a customer when you are dealing with the Internet or any other publications is poor pictures.  People remember the really bad and the really good.  Unfortunately, the really bad are usually the ones that do get some laughs from other breeders.  If you are going to post pictures...PLEASE, take the time to post a good one.  It will make much better turn around for your herd in making connections with other breeders.  Even if cattle are a hobby, it is still a business.  Large amounts of money can be gained or lost.  You wouldn't want just ok or bad views of how you do your own career.  Don't do the same for your herd.

As for the calves, I've gone threw building phases.  However, keep in mind how much feed costs.  If you have unlimited funds to put into calves that really aren't good, then go for it.  However; most of us would ship these and use that money to buy one really great mama.  It isn't always quantity...it is quality!
