Overdue cow

I have a cow bred to Bojo that will be a week overdue tomorrow. Her vulva is extremely large and it has looked like this for about 10 days. This will be her second calf...should I induce her or wait some more. I'm worried about the calf being too big especially since there aren't any calves out of him yet.

Do you have a vet close by that could check her? Or someone you trust? They could rectal palpate and see what size of calf you have. We have induced before in the same situation. The only issue we had was retained placentas. I dont hesitate to have one checked by the vet now if they over due and I KNOW the exact AI date with no chance of coverage by a bull. We don't have a very large herd and one loss cuts into the bottom line tremendously.

We have the same problem starting I'am afraid.  Ours is two days over due.  She went 7 days last year, we induced labor, she had sin city heifer calf ,only lived for alittle while.  Wondering if we should induce her in morning.  We have a small herd also, don't need to lose any either.    Might call the vet in morning and see what he says.

OH breeder is right.  If you know the AI date for sure and there is no chance its a preg covered by a latter bull she should be checked.  Calf may be backwards, large, so on and so on.

its worth the extra time and money to get her checked in my opinion.

The one year I left one go and didn't check her  was a first calf heifer that didn't look like anything. THought she'd have a peanut. Took us 3 hours to get the calf out 100#s and she prolapsed and tore. I had two c-sections that year one elective just because we had already lost a set of twins and a singlet birth and one cow. When you are only calving 15 or so that hurts. I have such a great vet we use him alot. It takes him an hour to get to the farm but he is one that says dont hesitate to call. We know we are very lucky.

Her first calf was backwards out of Copyright that we had to pull. He lived. I'm sure she was AId because we biopryn checked her after 39 days and she tested pregnant. I'll have the vet check her if she doesn't calve this weekend.

I had the vet check one a couple years ago that was over due a week.  After checking her she calved the next day but had to pull it.  It was 120 lb calf but was an easy pull.  Cow weighs about 2000 and has never had a calf under 90 lbs even as a heifer.

Vet told me that when you palpate the cow you can stimulate her to calf.  I had two last year that were acting like they were calving but wouldnt work at it.  Checked them and the water bag and calf was about a foot inside and they were both dialated.  Called the vet he came and double checked and we gave them oxytocin both cows calved within 45 mins.  Vet actually gave me a bottle and said if you got one that isnt working at it but is dialated and calf coming right give them 7 to 8 cc's of oxytocin.  It makes the contractions start and works.

If she does not have the calf in the next few days, either have your vet check her or you can palpate her yourself. I had a heifer that was 5 days over and felt that the calf was in the correct position and went ahead and induced her. The main concern is a retained placenta, but we give ours Oxytocin for that and they clean just fine. Good luck!

Most of our AI cows are overdue but I'm mainly worried about this one. A couple hours ago we had a Point Taken out of a Maine/Angus cow and it was unassisted probably 90-95 pounds. Was not expecting it to have so much chrome! I think the calf has more white than black on it. She was 5 days over (288 days).

The cow went into labor this morning at about 5:00 and we pulled the calf out at about 6:15. I would say it weighs about 100 and it wasn't too hard of a pull. It's a bull calf and he looks pretty good..

The cow is a Laredo (Habanero) x Draft Pick. This was her second calf.  Yea it was 8 days overdue and it's all black.

We are going to make him a steer and he will be for sale. We didn't weigh him but he probably weighed a little over 100 but he wasn't a hard pull.
