WEEEEELLLLL, the discussion of possible partnerships on bulls or show heifers always seems to come up.  We have partnered on one and find ourselves in an uncomfortable position.

What have been your experiences.?

Most have been good. However I have had one wnpl always tried to out do himself n everyone else. Can get annoying. Most work if everyone tries to be who they really are

I have tried a partnerships in an other businesses with a best friend, didn't work out too well.  I guess I should have known from the start as we have completely different business ideologies, I am cheap and he wants to spend money.

I have been working with my family in a business and it has been great.

We've been involved in a few partnerships and a majority just don't end well. We had one bull that we raised and sold to a guy for 1/2 interest. The guy ended up in bankruptcy status 2 years later and decided to haul the bull to the sales ring for quick cash. Other arrangements always seem to end with people unhappy about how the bull is promoted, how much is spent on promotion, whether they should be shown again, who pays what expenses, etc. God forbid the animal ends up getting hurt because then you have a whole nother avenue to go down.

The most difficult partnerships I'm in now are the ones with my father. We purchse all our bulls together with each having half an interest, and talk about some lively discussions at times :)

What ever happened with the Legacy Plus lawsuit a while back? That was a partnership gone wrong with possesion being very important.

I have had nothing but good luck as far as partnerships go.  I don't have very many and I am very selective as to who I do business with.  Believe me, I have learned first hand from my family how fast partnerships can go south.  If I can I definitely avoid them.

Farwest, I assume the partnership you're referring to is the Syndicate for the critter in your Avatar picture?   (lol) Would you be willing to sell 1/3 interest and fall possesion in that elite bred goat?

we went into a partnership on some embryos we bought. The seller put them in & was to raise the calves & then we'd split the sale 50/50. Out of the 3 used 2 took & were born. One was born dead. The other is still alive as far as we know. No feedback from seller as far as what has happened to her. Several e-mails have gone out. I think hubby is going to talk to the at expo & find out were we stand.

Our screw up was that nothing was in writing & done over the phone. Might end up being an expensive lesson.

I guess I have been very lucky. I have been in numerous partnerships and I have only had two that did not work out well. The first  involved a set of cows we purchased in a sale in Kansas City that had been brought over by the Irish government, and sold in a sale at Curt Rodgers place . We purchased 8 bred females and we ended up not getting them into Canada, as we could not get them to pass two successive blue tongue tests. ( Ireland is bluetongue free, and these cattle were only in the US a few weeks prior to the sale, so I suspect the test was very inaccurate). After having them sitting near the Canadian border in North Dakota for 16 months and testing them monthly, we ended up leasing them ( and now two sets of calves) to a breeder in Illinois. It was a disaster and after not getting cooperation for almost three years, we had them picked up. I phoned a man I know who lived fairly close, told him the story and he agreed to do pick the cows up. He had more intestinal fortitude than I would have had, a she simply drove to the farm, told the guy to get the cows in, and loaded them.

The second one that did not work is more recent. I partnered with a breeder that I has sold several cattle to, in Maryland, on a female in a sale in Nebraska. Prior to the sale, we agreed on how much we were going to spend. I was going to be away so he agreed to do the bidding via the phone. He bought the female for twice as much as we had agreed to. I refused to pay for my share for several months, because of what he had done ( my share was $6200... and he still owed me another $3000( from another deal we had) that he agreed he would pay on the female that was purchased. The sellers of the female started to phone me regularly... and I ended up being the bad guy in this. I finally paid for the female as I thought mu reputation was worth more than 1/2  a cow. To this day, I have not received one cent from my partner in Maryland. He did phone me a few years ago and he said he was selling two daughters, a son and some embryos in the Ohio Beef Expo and he would pay me after it was over. Still haven't seen that money either. A rather important lesson learned... your partner is as important as what you are buying.

Other than that, I have owned many herd bulls in partnerships, and  I now own several cows in partnerships in several places. All have worked out well. Maybe I have been fortunate, but I certainly make sure i am comfortable with my partner before I get into the partnership.
