We're considering the purchase of a Port-a-Cool unit to use in conjunction with fans to cool our show cattle.  What experience has anyone had with these units?  How well do they work in humid conditions? (We live in Iowa).  We're thinking 2 smaller units (16-24") might be more effective and more portable than 1 large unit.  I realize AC would be more effective, but I like the portability of the Port-a-Cool.  Thanks for any insight!

I have used a Port-A-Cool for the past two years her in Texas where we will hit temps 100+ with 90-100% humidity.  I have been very satisfied with the results using it in conjunction with the Sullivan Turbo fans.  The units are built 40 miles from where I live and used a lot by auto shops, plant nurseries, lumber yards and athletic teams to help keep employees and athletes cool.  I am using the HD 24" model with a 1/2 hp motor and was able to keep hair on a Shorthorn the entire summer.  I highly recommend it over an A/C unit for outdoor use due to the amount of air it moves.  Below is how I have mine set up:

                                TF                TF                  TF                TF

Port-A-Cool          8x16 Pen      8x16 Pen    8x16 Pen      8x16 Pen

This configuration allows the Port-A-Cool to blow directly across the four pens, while the Turbo Fans push the air on the calves.  I have placed the Port-A-Cool on a table so that it is three feet off the ground.  My barn is open on the East and West ends with a 16' peak above the pens and insulated, with this set up I can lower the temperature (inside the pens) 15 degrees year round.  I run my Port-A-Cool from end of April through November here in Texas.  If you have any further questions PM me and I will try to help.  Sawboss
