Portacool system

Has anyone used one of the many portacool systems in their showbarn instead of having a ac unit installed. Seems to make more sense to use one of them instead of the AC units since the barn is used for other purposes after the show season.

It just depends on your environment, goals, and facility. A port a cool works well maybe 3/4 days a week here in IL.

Portacool, Swamp Cooler, Evaporative Cooler, whatever you call it...won't get cold enough for us.


They will certainly make it cooler, but it won't be like it is on the Cool Room.

We are in the worst part of the country to use them and still use them often- "cold" here isn't mandatory when it's 91 at night in turn outs- we have 5 of the huge ones where I work and 1 medium sized one on 1 heifer at the house on my personal calves and they do work well. Humidity does hurt them and no ice water in them doesn't make a damn lick of difference but they don't blow hot air and we use them religiously instead of coolers

I have two port a cool units in my calving barn.  The purpose is to keep those hairy, clubby calves born in the July, August cool during 100 plus days.  It works great for that purpose.  I am not sure how the units would work for "keeping hair" but would be would be better than just fans  and much cheaper than AC.

I see them used @ the Ohio State fair very often to keep the calves cool.  The will have 3 on one calf.  1 on each side and behind as they are tied up.
