Problem with Bull

I have a 14 month old shorthorn bull that I bought last fall to clean up with. Tonight one of my half shorthorn cows was in standing heat, so I thought I'd try something different and breed her to the bull. Put the cow in with him and first, he looked at her and walked away. When he came back, he tryed to jump her but he acted like he could not get off of the ground. Kept him in with her for an hour and he couldn't do anything. What would the problem be? Pulled stifle? He has always seemed to be very aggressive when we've had cows and heifers in heat in the pens near him, but put him in with a cow and he couldn't breed her. ???

You might think I'm kidding but put another bull in to show him how to do it, it will work.

oh boy...not sure about your problem...but i had a quite humorous problem one time...had a bull that i raised and when it came time to turn him out for the first time...he was totally clueless....for three days all he would do is jump on their heads...every other part was working correctly except for one small problem, he was at the wrong end...we laughed and laughed at first, but by the third day, i was starting to get a little worried...my uncle told me to just be patient, he would figure it out...he finally did...and never saw him jump the front of one again after that...

I second putting another bull in with him. We had a virgin bull last year who tried, but never got "in there". Well, finally, one day we seen him get 'er done and we've had a pretty decent conception rate considering the extremely dry summer last year.

I think this bull has other issues. The past few days he has been acting very odd. I'm not sure what happened to him. Normally, when I get in his pen he is wanting to play and jump around but the past couple days he doesn't even move and he acts like he's out of it. When he was in with the cow, he knew what to do...he just couldn't jump like he was too weak or something.

As for putting another bull in with him...In my opinion, if you have to show a yearling bull how to do his job, there is something wrong. All of the black bulls we've had in the past have never had any problems getting cows bred and knowing what to do. lol

He might act like he's out of it cause he's embarrassed or ashamed.  Tee hee.

inadequate might we say? mash some Viagra up and feed it to him.

Might wanna get a vet to check him out he might have a structure problem that is making it hard or painful to actually get up and breed a cow.We had a bull with a dislocated hip and he would breed the cows but calving season went from march-july for a dozen head.

yea our old bull had some bad hips and gave him some problems but he got er done... except for that one we put down last week, he got her a lot later

It was black bulls that we have had problems with, not many, they just  'got it' quicker when they saw it happen.
