Purina 4T Fyer

I am looking for some informtion for those who use this product.  What is a good "general" (I realize you have adjust for the ind. calf) ration you use to mix with 4T Fyer to finish with - (I plan on using both corn and barley)?  What is included your ration and %'s do you use.

What %'s do you change from growing to finishing?

Overall, what do you think of this product?  Good and Bad.

You have found one good product here. I might add a little SBM (5%) in your mix. I worked up to the 20% mix to finish. But know others who continue at the same rate from start to finish.

I have heard a lot about this product so I'm trying it this year also. I am mixing 60% corn, 20% steam rolled oats, 20% Purina, 75#/ton liquid mollasses and 5#/ton fastrack ( Mocrobial pack). I was adding a little cottonseed hulls but cut that out on my last batch.

You sure don't need the cottonseed hulls since the 4T-fyer has them. ATOZ it will be interesting to see how you like your mix.

SD - I am curious as to why you said "interesting" about ATOZ ration?  What are you thinking and why?

I am far from being an expert on feed rations and seek out as much help as possible. Also knowing that there are many ways to get to the same place with feed. All that said, IMHO, I think it is an interesting way to get there. But I don't know ATOZ's goals either. I wouldn't use fastrack. But not sure type of cattle ATOZ is feeding maybe they need the extra kick. I think there might be some appetite enhancers in it. Might want to check the label.

But mainly I think it will be interesting to see how they will perform on that ration.

If you have any suggestions on my ration please don't be afraid to throw them out. My goal is to add pounds but also grow. The fastrack is to help them utilize the feed better and to keep them from bloating.( Hereford steer mainly) .

I just think you may be doubling up on somethings and with prices of ingredients going through the roof you don't want to pay for thing to fly out the other end.

All that said, when changing rations spend plenty of time on the scales. Keep track of that ADG.

My opinion and my opinion only is not to go over 50% with corn. When using the 4T-fyer I wouldn't go over 40%. I would use about 30-35% oats with 5-10% Soybean meal. You could throw some milo if you want as well. For taste if you want to go with some molasses no more than 2%.

Then be sure you have a mineral available to them as well. For steers I use a block or lick.

Here is the recipe our feed rep gave us and we were very pleased with it, we fed it for about a year and a half, we have gone to the honor premix because it is a little bit cheaper with the same basic ingredients, I have also included the specs for it.

Here is the Honor, we had it figured using both soyhulls and oats, we tried and weren't happy with the soyhulls, it was a really dusty, fluffy deal but it was about 30 dollars a ton cheaper, anyway we feed with the oats.  In comparing this it is not what they are grinding at my feed mill for me, so I will let you know after I talk to them what the differences are.

Thanks Jill. I believe there is just some small differences between the Honor and 4T-fyer besides the Honor not having cotton seed hulls. I like the analysis thats always a great idea to get.

Jill - You mentioned cheaper - If you don't mind me asking  (if you don't want to say  that is ok - not trying to be nosy, just comparing) how much cheaper was the honor premix compared to your feed rep's recipe?

Also, - 16% protein level with 3-4% fat - Was this a grower ration?  I am curious (curious meaning learning from others who know more than I do) how can you lower the protein to say 11to 12% (with higher fat content using 4t Fyer) to finish with get the right amount of cover and then not burn all your hair off in the summer months?

This is a grower ration, but it is what we feed all the way through, I'll get with her and see if she will figure a ration for the finisher also.
All of the rations came from our feed rep, they were formulated to match the bagged show chow grower we were feeding and you really can't tell the difference.  I don't know that there is a lot of price difference in the total mix, there is a 2 dollar a bag difference in the 4 T Fyer and Honor, in our case we bring in 6 ton at a time so theres a little bit of a price break.  The price quote she got in Oct. was 285.17 for the soy hulls and 331.60 for the oats, the Nov. 23rd grind was 322.33.

Ok, I kind of had a brain fart, I hate getting old after the eyesight, the memory is the next thing to go.  The ration I gave you with the nutrition info is for heifers we are holding a little, they were starting to get fat pockets and we were wanting to slow them down. 
I have attached the recipe that we had ground last time, it is the normal Honor grower recipe it is what we replaced the Fitters Edge with, it should be around a 14% protein and last year this is what we fed all year.  For the pen of show heifers we are slowing down we then mix this 1/2 feed, 1/4 oats and 1/4 beet pulp.  I'm sorry if I have totally confused you now, the recipe attached is the $322.33 per ton price I gave you.

I agree Jill this getting old is getting old. Thanks for the info. This is much like what I am using minus the alfalfa pellets. Though I do feed alfalfa.
