good afternoon, I have a person that has contacted me about a steer that they can do anything with well almost anything.  The steer is very friendly and will stand in chute, lead all around let them groom it and everything. Once they get the show halter out the steer get very nervous wont stand still and wants to get away. I thought I could possibly help and when I tried the steer wanted to pull and get out away from the halter.  Does anyone know of any tricks to get him use to this type of halter. The steer is very calm other than that.  That for your suggestions

It's very likely the chain on the show halter . we usually wrap the portion of the chain that goes under the chin with vet wrap .

I agree with the chain idea. I actually swap out the chain leads for a black rope on most of my show halters. I am brutal for not trying chains at home so using a rope takes away some of the surprise.

Possibly try putting the chain halter on him, then put the rope halter over the chain halter. Use the rope halter as your working with him. This may get him accustomed to the chain halter. Best of Luck!

I have seen it first hand, first show of the year, the boys had cleaned all the halters pulled off the old vet wrap, oiled the leather had the halters ready to go, they did not put new vet wrap on. The youngest boy's steer was real easy to lead never a problem, but his first class (2 ring show) the calf was being an idiot, fighting, balking jumping around, would never settle down. One of our friends said it looks like he is fighting the halter, so over to the Sullivan's trailer one roll of black vet wrap and a completely different calf in the next ring. He set up, lead easy and was back to his mellow self, just like that.
