Question on amount of sedative to give heifer

We use thorazine and everyone gets a little before show time.  Calves that are real gentle get a 1/2 cc to Ext X Built Right gets 3/4 rectally.  When one has had a early heat from being on the road a cc.  Seriously a 80 lb kid and a 800 lb hiefer lets be safe.  We work with our calves alot and they go to alot of shows and we don't leave home without it.

Still think if is wrong to dope the calves.  Sends the wrong message to the kids:  "It's okay to take shortcuts."

Ahh amatuers. Call your vet and request some Rompin, approved for cattle. We use it for working on cows and calves, there is no reason to get hurt when we have drugs that work. About 1cc will take the edge off and allow you to handle them. Do it at home a couple times and you may not need it at shows. But do not let these people make you feel wrong, stuff is used more than you think.

I agree, Rompin is great for working cattle in the chute.  We have used it for prep work on sale cattle.  Just don't think it is needed on halter broke, gentle show heifers and may calm them down too much if you know what I mean.

If you decide to use Ace, Thorazine, or Rompin, please do so carefully.  We use Rompin when doctoring on cattle, but I have seen a 1000 lb animal drop from an inexperienced tech over administering the injection.  It does work well, but if you use too much of Rompin it will put the animal to sleep within 30 minutes and a heavy overdose will put them down for the count.
