Well we condition every day this time of year to get the hair in shape, but once you get going and use the sheen daily, you can most likely just condition every other day.  We put a few ounces in the bottom of a bucket, and then fill the bucket about 3/4 full and just pour it right on the calves. Then put some in your hands and rub it in the hair on all the legs and the flank. Then we comb and brush the conditioner in and then blow them dry. We usually do this in the morning, because we rinse 3x's a day and if you do it at noon, the hair can get heavy and make them warmer in the afternoon, and at night, you don't want more in the hair than is necessary so its not heavy at night. We started doing this before we had a cooler, but it works just as well with a cooler.

Also, don't put the calves in the cooler until they've shed out at least 75% of their old or dead hair because you don't want them to hold that all summer. The point of a cooler is to grow new hair and to keep them eating all summer long.  A good date for us to put them in is May 1 most years.

Get a grill brick and go over them with it in the morning before you rinse them. When you stop getting a bunch of hair out with it, you can go ahead and put them in the cooler. Also, if you have black calves all the red hair is dead hair, and new black hair is usually very shiny and healthy looking.
