Quick question-was MR Tri Cando a usefull bull?

He was from the bigger taller era but a good bull with, imo, a good pedigree. Calvin Fryar bought him and had a"lot of good calves" from him. I flushed the cow below to him last fall and got 15 eggs.

I used him because even though you had $2 who was too big but good top and bottom here were still the more moderate bulls like Cunia, Echard and 81e in the pedigree combined with Timon top and bottom. $2 sired a lot of the show winners in the early days. BIG OL GOODUNS! <cowboy> <cowboy>

I had great luck with Dollar II 30 years ago when it became "legal" to use Fullblood Maines on Shorthorns.  The Roseleafs in my herd are still the most numerous and productive and all go back to a Dollar II sired cow I raised.  If I was younger and had more energy I'd use it today along with Capone, Cunia, Epinal, etc.  I used a few "modern" Maines over the years and always felt the original Fullbloods added more genetic kick.  The only Fullblood bull I didn't have such good luck with was Red Alert.  Probably the most desirable Maine as far as physical appearance, but his daughters just didn't milk well enough for me.

Red alert is probably the reason sooner and limited edition have no milk


He was a total disaster for the breed.

No just the 5 on Tri Cando-$20  I think I have a bunch of Hardings Cap Gains also have to see if it ever got picked up- O0

I saw MR Tri Cando a few times, and I never really thought of him being a really big bull, but back then, most everything was bigger framed than today. He was a thick well balanced bull with lots of eye appeal. I remember seeing his calves and they were very uniform and thick topped. One year, I delivered 8 Cando sons to a rancher in Northern Nebraska. They were certainly a good set of bulls.
There certainly was a lot of bigger framed bulls in that era than Cando was. He actually was a pretty decent bull. He sired good calves from both sexes. He certainly was much smaller framed than Dollar 2, who was one of the biggest Maine bulls ( and possibly one of the biggest exotic bulls). For several years, Dollar 2, Capone, Cunia, Covino 111 and several others were housed at an Ai center not too far from here. I saw these bulls many times each year. There were also many bulls of other breeds there as well. Dollar 11 was the biggest of them all and I remember the card over his stall showed him to weigh 3320 lbs. He was absolutely massive!  I used far more Covino 111 as I thought he was a more complete bull, and also used Cunia considerably. At that time we were running 350 Shorthorn cows and we bred about 50 to Maine bulls for a few years. We produced some pretty good show steers from the half blood Maines we produced.

I saw a Cando at Deertrail out of a real dual looking part Guiness part Hilltop cow She was a real nice looking red and pretty fronted female-not course at all but much thicker than her mother O0

I had a line bred Cando heifer that we showed in the early 2000s. She was pretty cool looking and did great in the show ring but we had a hard time getting her bred. Cando was not the best in terms of testicular development but was a nice looking bull for his time. Someone should have pictures of this guy. Remember seeing him in The Voice. I would guess his BW would sit somewhere in middle of the chart.
