Sale Catatlog Misprints

We consigned a heifer to the Michigan Beef Expo. I sent in the ad and picture for the sale catalog. As soon as the catalog came online I checked over our listing and they absolutely BUTCHERED IT. I was not happy due to the fact that this sale was NOT cheap consign to. I called four days ago and asked them to fix it and they said "sure, yep, ok, yep, uh-huh, ok". Four days later its not fixed and Im pretty sure the proof has been sent to print. They mispelled five words in our five line ad, cut off a line, and mispelled Hannibal. So my question to is...What should I do? I checked over the other ads and failed to find this many typos in one of them. So what do I do?

Welcome to the club Chris. They left a complete line out our heifers writeup. On top of that they spelled our last name wrong. I'm also never listed as a member although I pay my dues.

our calving ease EPD's were wrong last year.  I'd just give them a call again...its a stressful time of year for all cattle producers (if it is a producer making the catalog like in Iowa) Give them the benefit of the doubt with one more call.  It wouldn't hurt... (thumbsup)

Well all be get out...I checked the ad this morning and it wasnt fixed. I posted this and I come back this afternoon and its fixed lol.They still forgot to put in our epds and mispelled two words, but its not as bad as it was... <beer>  <alien>

It is a truly thankless job - being the sale manager - everyone complains and no one ever offers to help - yes we all spend $ on these sales but the people doing the bulk of the work are volunteers ....if you aren't happy with how things went maybe next year volunteer to help the sales manager  :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

I was in charge of doing the Kansas Shorthorn Directory a couple times. We would send proof home with 7 or 8 proof readers and we always missed something. The more set of eyes you can get to look stuff over the better.

I believe that is exactly what RW said a week or so ago with the Red Angus sale in Iowa. You make a good point DL. If you are going to tear something apart be ready to offer assistance's in making it better or offer solutions. It is easy to criticise something you have not put any work into.
Not directly intended for you Herefordfootball  just a general statement. Glad you got your ad corrected.

Maybe the proof readers had a little too high of "proof" in their catalog assembly beverage . . .  <beer>

I just think 7 mistakes and no epds is kind of overboard. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but the fact that it cost good money to consign and the sire was mispelled, got me going. And yes I'm glad too that they got some of it corrected.

I can tell you from experience that if I charged by the hour, sale expenses would be much higher. Especialy in a consignment sale where you are dealing with many different consignors. Some consignors are very good and basically all you have to do is put there information in place and go to the typesetter, others are a nightmare! I once got an entry for an auction that consisted of a picture and a registration number, nothing else. The picture was not of catalog quality and there was no explaination as to whether it was the animal in the auction or it's dam, grand dam etc. I have written litterally hundreds of foot notes on animals I have never seen, based strictly on pedigree alone. One consignor once told me that if he had known his heifer was as good as the catalog made her sound, he would never have put her in the sale. It all looks so simple and easy when you open up a catalog and start thumbing through it. But just as consinors differ greatly so do sale managers. RW

I appreciate you sharing the experience RW. We sent in the pic from Lindes Livestock Photography. We wrote the footnotes, put in the registration number. I checked back in my email to make sure it wasnt I who had made the typos and it wasnt so thats when I starting making the phone calls.

I am right with you RW - I ran the MI Maine sale from it's inception until I couldn't stand it any more! Everybody pisses and moans and nobody thanks the people doing the work FOR FREE! Nobody thanks the volunteers. If you have a complaint step up to the plate and do something constructive or maybe just thank the people who donated their time so you can sell your heifer....it costs way more than what you paid to run the sale and a huge chunk of it is donated time.....from where I sit it would make more sense to have the information sent in electronically so it doesn't all have to be entered by hand.....but I am not in charge nor do I want to be...... ::)

Road Warrior, DL and others, how do you decide sale order? This can be a touchy subject. Do you decide based on what you think is the best quality selling first or is it first come first serve, a proper sale commitee....?

Sale order and catalog order are two entirely different things. The animal cataloged as #1 might be the last animal to sell in the auction. As far as establishing sale order it can/has been done alot of different ways. If the sale is sponsored by a state association, sometimes they will have a sale committee that will give you atleast some guidence. Some consignment sales have shows and sale order is based on placings. Some sales have a lottery drawing to determine sale order. Alot of sales are based upon the sale managements oppinion of the cattle and their marketability, usually done as the animals arrive at the sale sight prior to the sale. Another factor that sometimes helps determine sale order is if the sale management has "money" on particular animals going into the sale. Just the tip of the ice berg. No matter how you do it someone will go home disgruntled because they thought they should be higher in the sale order. RW
