Does anyone have any positive feedback on the new barn and stalling situations in san antonio? I've seen and heard nothing but complaints on social media and phone calls.
san antonio screwed up worse than before?

They just built a smaller version of houston. If you like reliant center you'll love it. If you hate the reliant center you'll hate it. I personally can't stand barns like that. So I don't like it. It's always been a poorly run show and from what I've noticed that hasn't changed. I can give you better thoughts after tomorrow. Just what info I've gathered from friends that were down there and what the show has posted.
What I know so far, my wife and others from our county arrived about 11 am today got in line with trailers, heifers and tack. They waited almost 1 1/2 hours for their papers to be checked so the people could get in line for stalling. Now they have waited over 3 1/2 hours in line to get stalls. Now they go back to vehicles to wait their turn to go to barn to move in. Tell me what about this makes any sense? San Antonio builds a new barn they know exactly how may stalls they have and exactly how may entries in the show but they can not prestall!!! I had hope that a new barn would fix the problems at this show. However, I was mistaken things may be worse than before. When you get your stall there is one 3 foot stall area per heifer. Absolutely no tack space for anything. There are no more tieouts so heifers and steers (next week) must remain in the barn at all times. After San Antonio has assigned stalls and all heifers have moved in there will be space not utilized. So why do they insist upon crowding everyone? I ask myself multiple times everyday during San Antonio and Houston "why do we do this?". I think I know some of the reason why this show is organized the way it is. San Antonio desires to be just like Houston. Some of the same people that organize, operate, and advise that show also operate San Antonio. This is the only way they know how to operate. They are not open to change or fixing problems. Also, if either show changed the way the operated what would they do with all the volunteers? Or all the essential advisers telling them how to run the show what would they do?

From what I've been hearing one of the two washracks had to be closedlast week and haven't heard if its useable now or not. The people are supposedly just as friendly, helpful and accomodating as they have been in recent years (sarcasm).

Hahaha (clapping)- so true! Houston and San Antonio have an abundance of volunteers! I joke that I like Fort Worth better because there are no yardstick wielding volunteers out to get me!

If you are thinking about coming to San Antonio this year and haven't already left for the junior heifer show don't. This is the biggest cluster I have ever seen, the rumors about not enough room in the new barn are true. If you are building a new cattle barn at your county fair or the like come and learn how not to build a barn or set it up. This is terrible

They said they expanded things for the steer show because there aren't as many cattle in there

3 hours and 35 minutes in the tent to get one stall, just to get a stall, not to mention actually setting in line
No tie outs
Washracks back up 20 minutes or so, 10 minutes if you washed early or later than most
Water is only at the ends of the isles
And in the heifer show with all that said, they still had to over flow stall in another barn
However we will keep coming back, the advantage is that it's equally as bad for everyone so the ones who adapt succeed as usual

We arrived at the Gembler staging lot at 10:15 Monday night with steers. We were in our stalls, set up, fed and watered by 12:30. The new barn is a BIG improvement over the old set up. The only complaint I have is that we are packed in here like sardines with no option for tie-outs. They should have left the show ring where it was in the past and used the whole cattle barn for stalling cattle. Over all I have to give San Antonio a "Thumbs-up" for the improvements.

I was there for the steer show. I thought the barn had some improvements from the previous barn. There are some things that no thought was put into. The wash racks were just a total bust. The men's and women's bathrooms were bigger than the inside wash rack. The inside wash rack had rails and hose bibs all around the wash rack and is in the shape of a C. But if you tied a calf to each side they would overlap each other. If you were in at either end you got stuck inside and could not get out. The other wash rack is out side. With the weather we had during the show it was freezing out side. We used the old wash rack to avoid the congestion and had no problems at the old wash rack. The water was another issue. We had to string out about 100 feet of hose to get to our stalls to wet bedding down. The isles are way to small. The feed alleys had 12 inch pipe support post in them and it made it difficult to get up and down the feed alley. They would not let you put anything in isles, so the UTV's could go up and down the isles. We ended up putting our stuff on an outside wall. The best part was no dust to deal with. The speaker system needs to be looked at. It was hard to hear. The weather was really cold during the show except for one day. It was nice not to freeze to death. The stalling was tight. We had 17 feet of space for 5 calves. They need to think about bringing back the tie outs. It makes it hard on the calves being in a 3 feet 6 inch space for 5 days. Not to mention trying to keep the stalls fresh. They have some kinks to work out. In all we had a good time.
