one of my friend's semen tank ran out of nitrogen and he lost roughly $500,000 in semen and embyos, so every one needs to make sure they get their tank covered.
my local semen distributor told me you can't insure shipments...how can you insure your tank/storage at your place? what companies provide the thype of insurance you mentioned?
I guess I'm guilty here because mine isn't insured. I would think you could find a company to insure the semen easy enough, I would think the embryo's would be a little harder to establish a value on.
Our tank went bad...and our blanket coverage did not touch any of it. We have checked everywhere and we found zero insurance companies that will cover it. If you know of an insurance company that will cover the tank and contents please share with us. We thought the blanket coverage would cover it, but when you go to make a claim, they all but laugh at you
I asked my agent and he said yes and it is on my policy. Any semen I own acutally is covered no matter who or where the tank is at. I have German Farmers. But man that would suck!
I am an insurance agent and it depends on the company. We are independent agents and all of our companies cover semen tanks and contents on your blanket. However running out of nitrogen is not a covered loss.
I learned my lesson a long time ago. I am still not sure if it was a bad tank or the AI company not filling the tank on time. One tank got warm and I lost most of my club calf semen and embryos. Saved some that was in a newer tank. That was the end of my clubby venture. I now pay NCG to store my semen and Westwood to store the embryos. I also no longer go crazy buying the next great bull or eggs. I was never able to find a carrier who would cover the tank, not even under a blanket policy.
I have nationwide and they will cover tank contents but it must be a scheduled item. It covers the replacement cost of the semen only, not the tank. It covers loss from tank failure, accident, or theft.
Again, it must be scheduled with the replacement value (within a range) kept up-to-date. Costs me about fifteen bucks more per year for the coverage.
You should also schedule any particularly valuable breeding stock, IMO.
