77A was 2nd in class at the RAWF in Toronto last week
59A was 1st in class and Junior Female Calf Champion
63A was 1st in class and Senior Female Calf Champion
They were very well presented and looked good.

Hi Lightnin......I produced the Poplar Lane calf and sold her along with her Dam to Shadybrook back in the spring.
Her Dam is just an awesome 5 year old cow. We bought her in 2008 at the Shadybrook sale. She was just 5 months old at the time and topped the open heifer section at 10K. She is now a big time, big league donor that flushes like a rock star and, both she and her progeny have million dollar dispositions.

The Champagne calf is arguably the best calf we produced at Poplar Lane in 25 years of purebred production and we have had some really good ones.
She's the real deal and better than her picture..... if you can believe it.
No disrespect to the competition last Saturday at the Royal but, she was pretty dominant.
That birthdate is accurate also....January 3rd.
I had a bad farm accident over the Christmas holidays and owe a lot of thanks to Blenview Farm for taking care of the cow. They brought her to their place and calved her out for me.

What is so interesting about this calf is, unlike so many Shorthorn calves with her phenotype and look she has only a very small touch of Trump in her pedigree. The new owner has so many great options on breeding her next year. Very versatile breeding piece.
Her maternal granddam was a huge super impressive Irish Mist cow.

Okotoks.....I know 5K seems like a lot of money for a Shorthorn to some people here in Canada but this heifer calf would be trading for at least 5 to 10 times that if this sale was being held in Dunlap Iowa or Modoc Indiana.
In my opinion, she's a once in a lifetime calf that would be a feature offering at any elite sale.

A poor picture of the Dam of Champagne.... taken when she was a 3 year old.....BIG female but so nice to work with. Very sound with a huge foot that her calves exhibit also.
She's in her working clothes and coming off a hay only diet all winter....shot taken in the spring.

I wasn't so much commenting on the $5000 but the activity on her so early in the auction! She is now over 10,000 with just over an hour to go. This is when I expected the bids to jump but I have not followed many online auctions. The All Gold bull has moved a lot this afternoon.
I don't know a lot about steer prospects but SBF Papparazzi looks like he would make a good project.

JIT....he's gone. Was only used only one breeding season and no matter how hard I tried to sell him privately I couldn't get him traded. To be fair, he was quite sick as a baby calf; lost his recipient mother and so on. Due to this, he ended up as a chronic bloater if fed concentrates but it was never life threatening. He was just fine on test all winter as a yearling.
Not sure you could have made one better in conformation and soundness. Super disposition and rocket fronted too. He had a huge foot like his Dam....not always typical of Sonny progeny..... and, I had big hopes for him....but, the dispersal changed all of that.
Really happy for the Shadybrook; they deserved all the success they experienced last night. The flush on the Dam of Champagne sold to Scotland I hear. The phone was buzzing last night....various people calling me to ask about the heifer calf and doing all they could to get her.
It was a good day for the breed and for Eastern Canada especially.....it was needed!

Okotoks....yes!....the bidding on the calf started quite early. I haven't witnessed many of these online auctions before but I think a good % of the bidders were staying on the sidelines watching and waiting to see how this heifer calf played out before jumping in on the other lots.
You don't know who is bidding online against you so from that perspective it is a disadvantage over a conventional sale but, I really like the fact that all of our options are in place right up to the end. Every animals is open to buy until the sale is over; you can compare prices and value. That's a big advantage I think.
Congrats to Lloyd and Kevin especially.....the managers and herdsmen don't always get enough credit for making things work. Those guys do a super job and I'm sure Shadybrook ownership do appreciate them.

I would also like to congratulate the Shadybrook crew for a great event.It was also a very fun event and I bid on a bunch of cattle. I only ended up with a set of embryos, and am wishing I had gone further on a few head. My biggest drawback was that I had not seen any of these cattle other than in the videos. I have purchased in another internet sale, and found the cattle did not look quite as good in person as they did on the video. The pictures and the videos were professionally done by Allan Browarny. I'm not saying that was the situation here, but it was stuck in the back of my mind through the sale. When heifers are selling for $6500- $10,000, I was wishing I had seen them in person. But that was just me. I totally enjoyed this sale. It certainly was much better entertainment than anything I have seen on TV for many nights. I found myself checking my cell phone every few minutes throughout the day to see if I still had the highest bid. I think we will see more sales like this in the future.

Bob... I hate to admit it, but that was exactly the case for awhile during the sale. At one point in the sale, I think I had the high bid on 5 lots and I really couldn't remember what my last bid was on all of them. Fortunately, they sent an email when you were outbid, but near the end of the sale, the emails were slower coming so I found myself watching the computer screen on a very regular basis.

I know my phone beeping with the 'outbid' emails was annoying the guys at the poker table all night... was a great sale! The format of every lot staying open for another 5 minutes certainly kept it interesting, I think I would have got some embryos purchased for a pretty good price if other lots hadn't kept the sale open longer!!

I agree that we will likely see another good online Shorthorn sale or two in the future based on the proven success of last night.
Some of us did have the advantage of being able to personally witness at least some of the offering a few days prior to the sale at the RAWF. That definitely made it easier to appraise them and compare to the videos and online pictures.
The Shorthorn industry here in Ontario really does need a high, quality annual sale. That's been missing since the Royal decided to consolidate all of the beef breeds into one event. Perhaps Shadybrook is now in a position to offer their traditional semi annual sale every other September combined with their new online event in the opposing years?
They are certainly leaders here in Eastern Canada and again, it was great to see the event go well for them.
