I should  buy a couple  canes of that bull and specialize in raising All Natural Gomer Bulls! (lol)

This is no joke... I leased a bull for a friend last year to another friend.  He'd been with the new females for almost 2 weeks when I got a phone call telling me that they had just watched the bull almost smash his own penis with his own front foot!  They were very concerned that he was going to hurt himself because he'd run it up between his front legs!!             I think that he'd make "Smiling Bob" blush & he wasn't fed any enzyte.   (lol)

Matters a lot, when you have a bull with about 30 cows, and you don't get 1 calf out of him. Kinda hurts the bottom line. For the record, he had a semen test of 92%.
Oh wow!  Did the breeder at least replace the bull?  Not that that's enough!

Tony

Yes, he replaced the value of the bull. Really not much else he could have done. By the time we figured the problem out it was too late in the breeding season for a replacement bull. One reason we still deal with the guy.

Once about 20 years ago we borrowed a bull that lesions or something that prevented the bull from getting the job done.

Doesn't a reproductive evaluation usually include whether or not the bull can extent his penis?

Not always. Lots of bulls don't extend all the way when being tested. And, I am sure that when the large breeders are testing a large # of bulls they don't spend a whole lot of time on each bull. Mostly they are just semen checking to make sure that the little swimmers are good.

This problem seems to be appearing more and more in the past few years. I am hearing that it is a highly heritable trait as well, however, I have not seen any documentation to prove this. It seems like I hear of a few bulls with this problem every year ( from all breeds) and I never heard of it until just a few years ago.

Years ago I had to take Ice Breaker to Ia State to get some warts on his penis removed.......WOW!......I just set there with my legs crossed, watching.....and trying not to pass out!

I don't post here much, but couldn't resist.....for a number of reasons!
First Olson, with regard to the washrack issue, to quote George from Seinfeld..."there was significant shrinkage!"
Second, while CPL's link was very informative AND timely (with bulls being turned out before long), the phrasing, "SHORT google search", made me laugh.
Next, not sure what RSC is "sellin' ", but I ain't "buyin", ha, just kidding, don't be upset!
Moreover, while I know fertility is low with regard to heritability, I would think this would be more highly heritable, especially with as much line breeding that goes on.

AND LASTLY, I WONDER WHAT RED WOULD HAVE SAID ABOUT IT, I'LL MISS HER INFORMATIVE POSTS SPRINKLED (SOMETIMES SHOWERED) WITH HUMOR !!!!!!

We had a bull whose foreskin grew over his penis and had to have him circumcised. Surgery didn't work though and he ended up hamburger  :(

This has certainly been a lengthy issue that has aroused a lot of verbal intercourse.  It seems we have probed it at length, stimulated a lot of discussion, and extended our knowledge base.  Hopefully, this will not become a seminal issue with regard to heritablility in the future.

Not to extend this any further but I'm not sure we have penetrated all the issues! We need to reach the inter core of this subject!

I had a yearling Jupiter son who tore his foreskin while breeding out in the pasture, pulled him out of the pasture and let him heal up for 3 months but he couldnt extend through the scar tissue. My vet said we would have to  'power' him through it with the probe or do surgery. Shortly after that  I had a heifer in heat next to his pen, I put her in with him and he managed to 'power' himself through the scar tissue and he was back in working order and no problems since.
