Shorthorn Breeding HELP!!!!!

I have a shorthorn heifers that has a VERY small frame size and I can't find a bull to use on her that will be safe>>>Any suggestions??

I have never heard of any calf killers out of Gizmo. he isn't going to add a ton of size. We had luck with Jake's Proud Jazz this year.
Northern Improvement and Traveler T510 throws them small but they grow extremely well. We also used Northern Improvement on a small framed Mossy Oak heifer. She had a 65# calf that finished at 52 "1/2" and 1366. Did very well at the county level.The big thing is live calf first go around.
Focus on live calf first time out and then work on other attributes in the following calves.

you have to be careful jpj is the hot ticket but can still have the occasional big calf. we like chiller seems to be a bit more predictable. But my suggestion is that if you are that concerned use a pur breed red angus and get a durham red with a very nice predictable low birth wieght.

We have used Gizmo for years and can have an occasional big one.  We have used Final Answer with great success he is an angus sire, and JPJ can throw a big one every now and then. JMO

Jazz Man had a 55 lb birthweight.  His first calves will come this fall, but alot of reputable breeders have been using him on heifers already - there were alot of heifers in Kris Black's sale bred to him.

Red Angus is also a great idea. I forgot about that. You can find some very predictable calvers in the Red Angus breed. Almost any bull can throw a "big one" as the cow is half of the equation.  What scares me about Jazzman is he is unproven. I just don't always think it is a good idea to use an unproven bull on unproven heifers. On Jazzman there are no birthweights recorded on the dam side of the pedigree.

Thanks for all the help....the heifer is really good but like i said she is pretty small,,,if you see a Jan shorthorn heifer and Jr nationals that is the smallest framed in the class that'd be her!! All the local judges have loved her..she's got a lot of good but a consistant critique is that she needs to be longer bodied? Is there a bull with the low birth weight that would help in that aspect!! I'm not really concerned about fixing that with the first calf, just want a healthy calf, but for future reference??

I don't know man, our January is pretty small...if we're in the same class, it'll be cool to see which is the smaller one haha.

I'm not in the buying mood right now, but it sounds like if I were, I'd try to talk you into selling her to me.  I'll take good over big any day of the week.

If the heifer is "very small framed" would you think about breeding her at older age, thus giving her more time to grow. He have done this on a few heifers, yes she maybe a little out of sink with the rest of your cows, but this has really helped us when the heifer matures down the road. Just a though!

Yea i havent breed her yet...thinkin about breedin her after jr nationals...we bred our other jan.s in april....at the state fair last year she was outsized by a good 4inches lol see ya at nationals

Getting by the first one is important. If people don't have patience to do this they are in trouble. I have been tolf it takes 10 years to develop a cow herd.jmo

I agree maybe wait till this fall to bred her, that's what I am doing with my Shorthorn plus heifer. But a bull that you might want to look at is ASF/M Jack Frost, he's at Masonic Village with Frank S. and he's only $20.00 a unit. He's has alot of good calves, my boyfriends brothers was Champ at the Pa Beef Expo 2 or 3 years ago.

I can't beleive no one has suggested this, but I would go lowline. Yep, a lowline. You would then get a halfblood lowline which could be shown as a lowline, or if it grew a bit more, you would have a shorthorn plus to show. I would go with what TJ might recommend as he has one, and knows of a red angus lowline that might work also.

Like you stated though, the goal is to get a live calf with no harm to heifer or calf!
