Shorthorn Bull-"Moose"

Has anyone had any calves out of this bull?  How have they finished out?  Have the grown well?  Are they hairy?  Any information would be appreciated.

I am not sure if this is the bull you are talking about.  I know they called him Moose. He sired some really nice calves.

I did a little more homework and yes that is the bull.  Thanks for the information.  Does anyone know if his calves grow well?

I was at the sale in Iowa when they sold a bunch of his calves-nice and thick,but seems like everyone of them toed out really bad-I went there to buy one and didnt. O0

Here are two twin heifers I sold at Greenhorns last year. Their mother is our donor WF Athena W50H. He should sire hair, good bone, level and square hipped, and these two heifers were easy fleshing. I believe he is one of the best, if not the best, Double Stuff son who is TH and PHA free. High birth weights can be expected. Some daughters may have fertility problems. I'll include a picture of one of my favorite cows sired by Moose who throws some good herd bulls.

JTM, Just wondering why you say you can expect some fertility issues. I've not ever heard of that being a complaint on him. I like the bull & his calves. I've seen some pretty good ones.

While we are on the topic of Mantua-- what happened to the farm after Scott died?  Was his niece able to take over?
I had heard at the time of his death that there was a lot of debt, but no backup plan to take care of it???
I went to all of their sales that they brought to Iowa at Anita before he died.  I still have a couple of cows in the herd we picked up at those sales.  I never purchased a Moose sired calf at those sales-- either the calves weren't what I was looking for at the time, or they went out of my budget range.
Very nice people at Mantua-- the calves were always honest when they came to Iowa and what you saw is what you got.

I have often wondered what happened with those cows.  We bought a bull from them in Denver one year and he is a solid bull we still use.  Scott was very good to work with and had real honest good doing cattle.  Most of the time it is very hard to bring a bull into our part of the world and turn them out on fescue and have them do very well. 30 days straight above 100 degrees on fescue can be a killer for some cattle.

I was at the MF sale Mark is talking about ( alot of Moose calves). I went to it after B Good's sale just for that reason. A big group of calves out of  1 sire.  I recall some shoulder issues- but to be expected with that pedigree. I do recall above average depth of rib too. Yes - lots of hair.
I have heard lots of good things about MF - recall a sale catalog with MF Ice house's dam in it for sale!! Now thats a club bull i would look up - if you dont mind thc?

Doc, one of the daughters I got from the original sale in Anita, Iowa I had to get rid of because she was not getting bred back. Also, I had a direct daughter out of CF Cherry TP 612 that had the same problem. Very nice cows phenotypically but didn't perform up to standards we have.

Yes, Keith was a very nice guy and his nieces also. I really don't know how things worked out for them. I do know that his niece is still around cattle and has some. Outlaw Cattle Co. is what they go by now. I believe Moose has either been taken to town or was sold to someone.

I think that it is hard to condemn a bull off of one cow that doesn't breed.
I went to a sale in Iowa that they had. I had been to B-Goods' sale that morning & tried to buy a 13 yrold Missie Ruth dtr & hfr calf that came from Mantua. I dropped out at $3800 & she brought $3900. The neat thing about her was she had had a natural calf every year since she was 2 & backed up each year by at least 2 weeks.This B-Good sale was the one that was topped by the white Prosperity x Helena Dottie hfr .  I went to Mantua's sale that night & ended up giving $3900 for an Eskimo Joe x Missie Ruth hfr( still have her today). The calves there were the most gentled down calves I have seen at a sale. Keith said that Cassie( his neice) did every one of them. Mantua was a 1st class operation & 1st class cattle. Keith was a great guy & I really enjoyed doing business with him over the years. The next day I went to Sullivans' 1st production sale. That was the year that Asset sold.
I think Cassie took something to Denver as late as 2 yrs ago. I think her prefix is CS now.

I saw Moose on a visit to Mantua and he was a stud ! His calves were very consistent I thought as was the cows they were out of.

I know that this the 1st I've heard of anybody raising questions about fertility issues on Moose progeny.So it might have been enviromentally caused problems also.  So I might understand where JTM may be coming from. But in the end I would take it into consideration , but still use him. I do know it would take more than 2 head to label a bull , one way or another. If that was the case , then  Jakes Proud Jazz would be labeled a hard calver, based off the the people I know that have had calves over 100 lbs & even over 105 lbs.

What I said was that "some daughters may have fertility problems". I don't believe that is condemning a bull by any means especially in the show cattle arena. I forgot to add that the first heifer I have ever taken back from a customer in order to get her bred because they were having trouble is one of the twins pictured before. She happens to be sired by Moose also. So that would make three instances of fertility issues. Not sure why you would be questioning the validity of my opinion? In the show cattle arena, I think a lot of negative traits go without saying. I just choose to speak up if I think it may help someone.

Definitely looks like one of his progeny! I'm sure Trausch bought some of that semen during the time Mantua's sale was going through their facility in Anita.
