Looking through my pics from from shorthorn u I ran across this pic of a cow I liked a lot.  I can't remember the name of the place we were at but this cow really stood out to me.  A deep wide set cow in an easy fleshing phenotype. A FS 5 at most. She was my pic there by a long shot and the only cow there the owner didn't know the pedigree on off hand. Not a fan of her udder, but otherwise..    If anyone remembers, it was the place we went prior to Kapers.

I like this cow.  With a calf like that, I presume the R/W with her, I can't find fault!

She clearly suckles fine and if she didn't need to be milked out at calving I don't see any problem.  The udder is therefore functional, not show grade though!

Have you seen the picture of SFS Danny D on page 106 of the July 2012 Shorthorn Country?  It is clear in both pictures that he has a testicular abnormality.  Both testicles should be of the same size and this bull is probably sub-fertile to some degree.

James E. Drayson's book 'Herd Bull Fertility' is an excellent read and gives further researched insight into this subject.  I gained a lot from it.

Have you seen the picture of SFS Danny D on page 106 of the July 2012 Shorthorn Country?  It is clear in both pictures that he has a testicular abnormality.  Both testicles should be of the same size and this bull is probably sub-fertile to some degree.

Judges didn't seem to care that much.

Do you not see a problem if the bull does in fact have a testicular abnormality and the "judges didn't seem to care that much?"

Perhaps if a problem does develop but i am more than sure that he will have no problem servicing his ladies. Seeing as how they are offering semen on him already perhaps the quality is a least from fair to good quality. In the end he is a show bred bull through and through with a slightly uneven set, not that big of a deal breaker in my mind. If he gets the job done and his calves develop anything like what the Scott family usually shows then no worries.
Although this bull is not my type, i have seen a lot of Scott Family Cattle and they got it going on in the show ring. SFS and V8 have teamed up in the last few years and have done some serious damage at the Shorthorn open shows together, so yea im cool with it. Just as long has calves come out alive, grow well, and do well at shows im okay with it.

I get what your saying. Obviously not a big deal to the judges. Jmo, he would have been steered here. The one pic makes it look worse then the other pic. But let's not forget a well the one nutt bull did at Ohio beef expo. I guess it's all preference but at what point are the basic foundation of good cattle compromised because you got a showy one? IMO those folks are walking a tight rope but so far so good.

My vet would never give him a fertility certificate for our sale!  He would also definitely not pass the Shorthorn Society inspection for full registration and would be culled.  From what I understand, testicular abnormalities are highly heritable.

This was just an observation, I am not trying to step on anyone's toes!

Duncraggan is quite correct in the statement that testicular abnormalities are very inheritable. The fact that this bull has done well on the show circuit will probably encourage lots of people to use him who have never seen him. It's amazing if the bull has a testicular abnormality that the judges will overlook such a fundamental thing in a bull. I wonder did they notice it and over look it or did they even notice it at all?

I'm guessing it was seen and deemed acceptable. Honestly a one nutt bull sold for good money last spring. If I didn't see it I wouldn't have believed it. This bull being discussed is much better then the one nutt but still I wonder.
