I have a Shadybrook Centurion Shorthorn heifer that is bred to Jake's Proud Jazz that is at 290 days today.  I know she was AI'd because I never had  a bull with her.  Her udder is full and she has some swelling in the rear.  I know the longer she goes, the bigger the calf will be.  The heifer was around 85# at birth and I know JPJ is supposed to be a pretty easy calver.  How long should I let her go before I induce.  I keep telling myself that mother nature will take over, but with every passing day I get more concerned.  Thanks for any input.

I would not hesitate to induce if she really is that far past due. I seldom let any thing go past 5 days over without at least a vet check...Good Luck and let us know as this should be a very good mating.

If you absolutely, positively know that she is bred to the AI date you can certainly induce her now.  Are you sure that she was not exposed to a bull??

I am sure she was not with a bull.  I don't have a bull and no other herds close by.  She has looked ready for a week, but obviously has not done anything yet.  I don't like to induce, but in this case I think it may make some sense.  Thanks.

I have had several JPJ calves....usually 4-8 days late.  BW's of 75-86 pounds. No pulls. Out of heifers.

Had our last of 3 JPJ calves today.  They went 280, 282, and we induced one at 282 days because we had to be out of town.  Calves have all been right around 80 pounds-- we pulled one calf the induced calf, the other two were born unassisted.  2 bulls, one heifer all pretty much solid red.  Very vigorous calves and they look pretty good.

I did not induce and she had a bull calf today weighing 86#.  I was going to induce tomorrow.  She had it unassisted and the calf was up really quickly.  I have only had 2 other Shorthorn calves in the past, but this calf is really good.  I have had many good black calves and this calf is one of the best I have had as new born.  He is hairy, huge topped, good boned, big hooves,  big butted and has a long clean neck.  The cow is a Shadybrook Centurion out of the Rainbow Showflower cow that Dooling1 has discussed on this forum.  She is mostly red with a little white.  I thought I would get a mostly red calf, but he is all white.  I guess he got that from Rainbow Snowflower cow.  I don't know what people think if white steers, but I think this one is going to be a very good one.  I will post some picture of him in a few days.  Thank you for all of the advice.

There was a white steer that was fourth or fifth overall at the Ohio State Fair last year. IF they are good I don't think it matters too much color here. Or it hasn't.
Your cow is probably a roan and you didn't even know it and JP Jazz is a roan hence you got all white. I was able to see Snowflower, and she is sound as can be nice cow. Congrats on a healthy calf!
