Show halters can be dangerous!!!

We have the kids hold them to where if the calf turns the hand can't get caught between the face and chain, 3-4 inches out.

that is perfect.  succinctness wins too.

Your really not suppose to hold onto the chain.  I know its is hard but it is a big no no.  Personally I like the rattle of the chain it calms both me and the calf in the ring if i click it quietly.

You hold onto the leather away from the chain.

Then I am old school.  Our chains are doubled so they are close to the animals head and I can control mine well that way and my hands are not at harm in the meantime.

I got cut on my palm and my pinky with a closed fist.  She jerked away from me and I think the buckle where the chain meets the leather is what cut me as it slipped through my hand.  It was the second time I had the show halter on her.  I don't get much help working with the calves since I am the only one here during the day so when they don't want to lead or cooperate, I have to try and pull them to get them to move.  I have had the heifer about a month and she is an October.  She was weaned on a trailer and then trucked from Iowa to Texas, Texas to Iowa and then to me in Virginia.  I think all of that trailer time really put her on edge.  This is the first of many shows I want to take her too, and we are expecting big things.  I just wish she would be an easy brake, but of course that wouldn't be the case.

Well, I guess if ya'all insist on holding on to the chains at least wear gloves or wrap it.

It is a proven fact that everybody that uses a showhalter will someday die....also every body that eats carrots is expected to die also....this stuff is nothing to mess around with. ;D

Idk if this is really relevant to this post but it kinda goes and Im so excited that I have to brag.  I was out in the field the other day b4 I went to FFA state convention and my mom wanted me to send her friend a pic of my steer. Well I didnt have a show stick or halter anywhere around and I wanted him to look really good so I picked up a little stick, lifted his head with my hand and placed his feet with my little twig.  Then I backed up and scratched his neck a little to get his head a little higher and he just stood there in profile for like two minutes for me to get my pics - and I wasnt even touching him  ;D

Thats pretty awsome.  I guess you have worked with alot then.  Last year my heifer was the best I had ever had as far as settng herself up and holding her head high.  In fact she held her head so high that I would have to pull it down.  I was really proud of her becuase the first show we took her to she got spooked and practically ran around the ring. 

So happy for you that is really something to be proud of.
