This heifer is a January 2007 crossbreed.  I have a show in 3 weeks and can't deside if I should show her in with the crossbreeds or as a market heifer.  I don't know if you can tell much from the picture but she is realitivly small framed and stout.  Any input would be appreciated.  Her Dam is out of Dr. Hook.

RbS -  (welcome)

Market heifers, IMHO, are the heifers that you wouldn't breed. So if you think she can pack on the pounds then I would take her as a market heifer.

If you do go the market heifer route I would stop her cycling. She will gain more that way.

You always have the option of not showing her at all, which may be the best option in cases like these. But what do I know, I'm just looking at a picture. Good luck.

She doesn't appear to have enough power from behind to show her as a market heifer.  If you can look at her and say she would have made a great steer or if you already have a crossbred class heifer and don't want them in the same class that would be the reason to go market.
I can tell you in the market class if she is smaller or younger you will get dumped, we had a little July we put in market because we felt she was too steery for a breeding heifer and they thought she just didn't grow well.

good point Jill. I think at first we thought the market heifer class was for heifers that were just a little steery. wow, they are some competative, holding their own cattle. Not rejects from the breeding heifer classes at all. I'm waiting for a heifer to win at our state fair. Some are that good.

I wouldn't ever discourage you from showing her.  Heck, not everyone can afford the "perfect" (if there is one) heifer.  Show her and have fun.  I'd go breeding.  She just lacks the power of most market heifer classes I've seen.  Good luck!

She has been shown before but just not by us.  She has done alright, but I feel that in a class of January calves she will be much smaller and most of the time the bigger heifers will get put ahead of her.  She is not going to be a big cow because of genetics but that always looks as if the animal is not growing quick enough.  Oh well we will see.  I plan on keeping her to breed either way.  I bought her, she is not one of my calves.  Thanks for the response.

I really think she is too pretty to be a market heifer. Like the neck extension and her overrall lines. What is the breeding besides Dr. Hook?

Since you plan on breeding her I sure wouldn't go the market route. Why fatten her up then need to loose some of it? I have seen and heard of  a few wrecks that came from former market heifers. IMO it's just not worth it.
