I had a calf born on March 16. On the 22nd I noticed he had a hernia, except not a naval hernia. This one was located about halfway between his navel and testicles. It was about the size of a golf ball and the hole was big enuf to fit my middle finger in comfortably. On the 24th he had surgery and got sewn up. Two weeks later I removed stitches and normal swelling was evident as well as scarring. I have been keeping an eye on this calf in particular, now a month later he had seemed normal, healing well, no swelling, and a moderate amount of scar tissue is evident. Until tonight I realized that it looked unusual. After feeling it I believe he may have torn his incision open resulting in another hernia, however it is hard to tell how big of hole or if there is a hole due to the scar tissue being in the way. Now my question, is another surgery called for? Will another surgery fix the problem? And, is there a chance that this calf will ever recover well enough to be shown as he grows up, as he just happens to be one of my top show prospects this year???

Any help guys would be great!

Would I be better off letting him grow up a bit and getting surgery done after weaning. The issue is I don't wanna put a pile of money into a calf if it ain't gonna work out. But I guess the earlier I do it the more hair growth I will have back on him in fall.

Where are you at?  You really need to talk to one of the really good show steer vets such as Dr Barker or his sons in Ok or Dr Wariner in Tx.
