I have a heifer with her first calf, which I will wean on Monday.  A few days ago, Tuesday, we put a dry cow in the same pasture.  She fought with the cows.  I sold her then on Wednesday, but when I loaded her I noticed this heifer had blood in both nostrils and mucus.  Her eyes were matted and running.  I called the vet and was told to give her 60 cc's of LA 200.  You could hear her breathing.  The next day she was better.  She eats good but today she had blood again in her nostrils.  Her eyes are still matted.  I gave her another shot.  She acts healthy and we did not notice any problem before Wednesday morning.

I have had cows all my life and never seen this.  My cows do not run with other cows and I have not bought any cows in 5 years.  We have had a long drought.  But in the last month I have had 1.3 inches and got .35 last night.  She has been on Bermuda grass, rag weeds, lots of pig weeds, and millet.

Joe Boy -- seeing how you put that strange cow in with her on Tues and on Wed she was having some blood in her nostrils, it kind of sounds to me like she lost the fight, and MAY have gotten a cracked or broken rib in the process.

If you can get close to her, look carefully to see if she has any swelling behind her shoulders -- this is usually where the boss cows will charge and head butt others. I recieved a donor in from another center a few years ago with an obviously broken rib or two. She would beeld on occasion if she was stressed or over exerted. Seems to have gotten the operator mad at her and they took it out on her with a pipe -- broke a rib and she was having some trouble breathing. It took her almost a year to get over it -- never bothered her to flush or come in heat -- as long as I was carefull and seperated her each time to keep her from getting further hurt -- she did real well. She carried a large lump full of fluid down low on her rib cage for several months after coming here. Pretty close to disaster for sure!

Hope she gets better soon!

I think it was an injury of some type too.  I have not noticed a lump, but have given her shots three times and after I gave her B Complex shot with the LA 200 three days ago we have not seen any more blood, the matted eyes are clear, and she is not having the occasional hard deep breathing.  Her milk is more.  She has a great calf..... I helped her a little have the calf and will wean it tonight.  She got her ears and tail froze after I pulled her into this life....... wonder if she likes me bringing her into a cold night on a Sunday evening, when she was in a warm comfortable place? ha.... thanks.....
