Yesterday, I took a road trip to look at some cattle & I saw what I thought was an awfully good smokey heifer.  I think she'll make a pretty good clubby momma cow.  She'd make slicks, but she has some awful good leg hair for it to be August & to have not been in a cooler.  I took some pictures of her.  Here she is...

Hope TJ doesn't get angry, but I'll let you guys in on what she is.  She's a September 27th daughter of General Sherman, which is a Lowline bull.  She is out of a grade Charolais cow, and she lives at my house!  She's my first Lowline, and while she's a little different than my Shorthorns, I still think she's a good little heifer.  She eats about half of what heifers of other breeds her age eat, and she's not all THAT small.  We're gonna guess that she weighs in at 650 or so, we haven't had the chance to weigh her recently.  She does carry pretty good condition, but I'm feeding her really really slowly, so I don't think she'll get too awful fat for the shows this fall.  I really think she's going to show well this fall and make a good cow, but that might just be me, and I could be barn blind.  Dori, if you see this, please weigh in on what you think of her or PM me if you want.

VERY nice heifer. I think you might have find a good balance, a lowline will maybe tame some of that Charolais frame! I have not seen 1 Charolais that isn't ten foot tall and just a beast. Keep us updated with pictures as she matures, and let us know about shows!

Great job!!!  (clapping)

I'm too sleepy to get too angry about much of anything right now... LOL!  That's part of the reason, I've been offline for a while... that & trying to catch up on everything from being gone 3 days during the last week.

I raised her & I raise Lowlines, so I probably am barn blind too, but I thought she looked pretty good for a Smokey heifer out my wife's grandfathers herd.  She doesn't need to get any fatter, but I don't think she's too fat yet... keep in mind that her head was turned toward the camera & that helped to produce the "fat rolls".   I will say one thing, Justin has done a good job with her & I am amazed that he has only been doing the show cattle thing about 5-6 years now & is as knowledgable & as skilled as he is.  He's also got some nice cattle, too... not just the Lowline. ;-)

FWIW, General Sherman is a 44 inch Lowline bull.  The Charolais cow is probably a 1,300 lb. frame 5 - 5.5.  This heifer is probably a frame 3.   She's shorter than I prefer my 1/2 blood Lowlines, but she makes up for it in mass & quality, IMHO.  And, in the percentage Lowline shows, they are supposed to judge for quality instead of size & I think she will run with some mighty fine heifers.  I still think that she will make a 46 inch, 1,100+ lb. powerhouse of a cow & 1,100 lbs., isn't all that small!!  I'm just guessing & may be wrong, she may end up bigger... it will be interesting to see how she grows & turns out.  In a couple of years, she could be flushed a to bigger clubby bull & really produce something special, IMHO.

I'd also be interested to hear Dori weigh in on this heifer... she has a good eye.

Hey, Justin, congrats on your first Lowline!  Always happy to see more people discovering the genetics!  The picture is a little hard to evaluate as I'm one of those who likes to see a pure profile shot along with others of front, rear, etc.  But from what I can see, I like her!  Lots of thickness coupled with feminity.  Obviously, females should look like females, even the thick ones, and I think she's got that covered. Since I haven't seen her in person, I can't comment on estimated size/height/weight at maturity.  Heck, I've learned that even with my own, I get fooled sometime!  I'd love to watch her as she matures as most of the % Lowlines are from Angus dams so watching a half Charolais will teach us a lot!  Feed and grow her slow as she does look like a real easy filesher and you don't want her to finish too soon.  Where will you show her first?  If it's the NAILE, it may benefit her right now to keep her on grass or hay and even limit her time on either.  She'll get a bit of a belly doing that but it's easy to take it off by cutting the roughage a couple of weeks before the show.  To quote you, pm me if you have any questions that can't be answered here!  Maybe I'll see you and her in KY!

Just one more thought regarding watching the different breeds of dams crossing with Lowline bulls:  Here are 2 pictures of a heifer born in 2005 to one of my Buelingo cows and by ABF Fitz. She's about 1 month old here and on pasture with the herd.  I was totally unprepared for those LONG legs.  I had several half Buelingo/half Lowline calves and all had those legs when they were born and up until they stopped growing "up".  They, then, stopped and thickened and turned into the second picture - same heifer at Denver in 2005.  Interesting, isn't it?!

Hey dori-thanks for posting!  To answer your question, her first show will be the American Royal.  I wanted to show her this summer at a couple county fairs, but we don't go to many anymore and it just didn't work out.  I sure don't want to get her too fat, and I have her on a really really high roughage diet right now, but I plan on adding some more protein to see if I can get her to grow some more.  I have her on a very small amount of grain, but she is extremely easy doing.  She's changed a lot in the 100 days or so that I've had her, and I suspect that she'll change a bunch in the next 100, but I like where she's headed at in her development.  I've also sent you a PM.  Thanks everyone, I hope you really like the little heifer!
