Looking to use a couple of Charolais-based bulls on some Angus-Maine based cows. What are the main differences between these bulls and where they will work (cow frame size, hair, thickness, bone size). Yellow Repo is the only THF of the three.
Just to make sure you know, Yellow Repo is PHC. I envision his best role is to produce females. I'm going to Black's sale this weekend and will the bred heifers out of him in person. I'm intrigued by them.
I'm probably the last person in Texas to try Solid Gold, but I have several on the way next fall bred that way. I've been told he has to be used on a very "pretty" cow. As proven as they can be for good slick shear steers in Texas though.
I'm feeding a Smokin Bob steer this year. He was out of a HooDoo cow. Very pleases with him so far. Very soft made (especially for a calf with a heavy shot of Charolais on both sides) and sound. Getting better every day. I consider him one of the most promising young half blood bulls out there based on mine and others I've seen as calves this spring.
Thanks Chambero. Neither SEK-Genetic Horizons nor Bovine Elite disclose that he is PHAC. We don't have any carrier cows, but it is good to know. As for Smokin Bob or Yellow Repo, anyone have an idea on frame size. It sounds as though Smokin Bob smaller framed?
You are correct, nothing I can find published says he was a carrier, but I could have sworn that I saw that last fall when I was picking bulls. You might call and check for sure, but I sure thought he was PHAC.
Been wondering that myself. I can't find any carrier status on him anywhere - I'll ask Kris, prob'ly not 'til next week, though.
Chambero, maybe you just figured he was PHAC. I kinda do just because he's out of a Power Plus daughter. Power Plus prob'ly did us more good than any other bull we've ever AI'd to, but we quit him because of the PHA deal. It'd sure be nice if he was free - I'd use him a lot.
I really thought I read it somewhere last fall because I was going to use him and then backed off because I'm running a really good PHAC cleanup bull on our "show steer" cows. I'm betting what I saw back then was wrong. If he's clean, I'll be using him this fall.
I talked with Kris tonight... he is excited about the female sale this weekend and says he has some good ones selling
says Yellow Repo double clean... says he will get him registered so we can get 3/4 maines out of our purebreds...
I had asked him last year about a bull that would add some depth of body and he said Yellow repo... I am putting in embryos tomorrow out of him x 2 different donors... I was glad he is clean!!
Thanks jbzdad. Have both Yellow Repo and Smokin Bob ordered to try out on a few cows. The Black Hereford Ranch Sale looks like it will be a good one. His pictured ones look like peas in a pod regardless of the sire.
