Here is an updated photo of our Feb Shell Shocked. He is impressing me more and more! So much that we weaned him this weekend, a little early, so we can show him at our district fair and maybe State Fair. We also had a heifer in June, out of a cow. She is small, and nothing special, YET. They seem to get better with age!

Bump.

FireSweep Ranch I saw you comment about Shell Shocked on another thread, how are your calves out of him doing? I know you got a couple last year. Anybody else have updates on the bull?

I have two that I still own (not sold as a pair last fall). I love them both still. The bull will be shown at Nationals is KY if he continues to grow like he has...I pictured him at 8 months old.
The heifer we have will likely be shown also, she is a June bred and owned. I will use him on heifers, without a doubt! The conception rate is really good on his semen too!

The one I had last year grew really well, good muscle, sound and super clean fronted. I really liked him for a steer.

I saw several at the Pa Farm Show on Monday.....they were all very fancy, clean fronted, with ample depth. If I were to pick on anything I'd want some more bone maybe, but that's getting awfully picky.

That being said I have 2 heifers due in early Feb to him, the one heifer is pretty fancy out of an Innocent Man cow so I'm hoping its a heifer. It could make a nice show calf.

That's great to hear from both of you. Really like the looks of that calf FSR!! It definitely sounds like Shell Shocked is proven heifer safe, however I have a question for you both and anyone else that cares to chime in.. I have a super thick clubby heifer that I will be breeding in March or April. I mean she is THICK and had a fairly heavy birthweight in the 90 lb range. What are your thoughts on using him on her? She's got great structure and will be a tank of a cow, I just want to make sure this first calving goes alright. Any thoughts? Thanks for all the info you've provided to this thread!

I will have a better idea after I calve a couple more heifers, but at this point I'd say you could use him and not have to worry about a thing. The breeder is a guy I consider a friend and he has said all of his calves have come small.

Thought I would update the pictures on our two shell shocked sired babies. The bull is a mid Feb, his dam is an Upgrade x Club King cow, and he is her second calf. We weighed them today, he was 930 pounds.
The heifer is a June born, so 7 months. Her dam is an Upgrade 3/4 blood we bought from Jeff Miller many years ago (she showed at nationals when it was in Nebraska, so that tells you how old she is!). The heifer weighed 556 pounds.
These cattle come VERY small. The bull was 58 pounds at birth, the heifer was 50 pounds at birth. They are the SMALLEST cattle ever born at our place, full term.
Shell Shocked seems to clean up the neck and shoulders, and add muscle. He does not seem to throw the white face. None of ours have had a white face so far, but often have a snip on the nose. Out of 10 straws of semen, we got 9 pregnancies, so I would say his semen has high fertility. Definitely has his place, I think.

Thanks for keeping us updated! Nice looking set of calves there. Still can't believe those birth weights... I have a shell shocked due any day now so I will update with what I get and hopefully some photo! It's a step up heifer bred to him and she came at about 70 lbs so I am expecting a fairly small calf, especially after what you guys have been saying. Her 289 day mark was yesterday so literally any time now..

Well.... Not to be the one to throw the thread off a bit, but my shell shocked was born yesterday morning at about 4 AM at the vet via C-Section. Now, there are a couple things worth mentioning here. I shot the heifer with Dex Tuesday night because she was a few days over her due date and I wanted to make sure I could be around when she calved. We watched her very close, and were right there when she started pushing. I let her push for about 20-30 mins and, not having seen feet yet, I put a hand in her to make sure all was presented correctly. I found front legs and a tongue, however, they were all turned 90 degrees from normal upright presentation. So the calf was coming laying on its side. It also felt to be a decent sized calf, nothing crazy but a little bigger than the 60 pound calf I was expecting haha. After a while of seeing if I could get the calf rotated, I decided I didn't think it was going to happen. This heifer wasn't the biggest heifer, but definitely not the smallest. She probably weighs 1000 pounds or so, maybe 1100. I haven't weighed her in quite a while.

Anyways, when we got her to the vet he felt and said there was no moving the calf to upright position and he recommended an C-section with as long as she had been pushing. Pulled out a very long, but fairly slender 85 pound bull calf. He is solid black, with a fairly long face like FSR's calf earlier in this thread. I can't take say much negative about the calving ease of the calf, he is very slender, just super long. Quite a bit of vigor, particularly for a C-section calf, although his mother is a little confused after having a rough start on her first calf. I will keep ya'll updated on the calf's growth moving forward.

I might add, I don't blame the bull at all for the fun times mentioned above!! Still love the bull, hope to get this calf rolling and bonded with his mother. Yeah it was a little heavier than I was expecting, but every now and then these fun things happen. I'm not one to let it change my opinion on the bull because of one bad deal, that was mainly due to calf presentation.

Interesting. I'll be curious to see how my 2 come this year. They should hit the ground any day.

What was the breeding on the cows side? Any feed fed right up till calving?

The heifer was a Step up X Steel Force. I raised her, she came easy from a fairly moderate Steel Force cow, weighed 72 pounds at birth. Only feed she got through the entirety of her pregnancy was pasture and grass hay. Who knows, maybe just not a lucky breeding for me! Have a few other things I'd like to try Shell Shocked on though.

Had one of mine arrive today. Wasn't around and wasn't expecting her to calve. Checked her at noon and there it was. 56lb heifer calf, had nursed and had plenty of vigor. Slender built with a long smooth front. Hopefully she turns on the grow now.

When the calf is malpresented things don't occur like they are supposed to so a person can't put much weight on that one.

Yep I agree CAB, I will be using the bull again- just maybe not on that female. Like I said before, the calf wasn't really thick at all, just long and malpresented. I think she would have had it by herself had it been presented correctly. I was a little surprised by the BW compared to what I had been seeing on this thread, but it ain't the end of the world for me, that and she had it at 293 days so it doesn't surprise me it was a little heavier than expected.
