steer with swollen knee

I have a steer that weighs approx 1200lbs.  Last night when I gave him his bath I noticed his hind knee was swollen, some puffiness on the inside also.  He is pretty straight on his hind legs.  It doesn't seem to bother him as he was kicking up his heels after his bath.  Terminal show at the end of the month.    What can I do for him?

The use of bute is to be greatly discouraged in food animals - and since you are prescribing goodnight what slaughter withhold would you use with bute? The steer seems fine and you want to give him drug esp drugs which should not be used in animals we raise for food? WHY?

DL, you will note that I told them to do nothing except call the vet. A vet would most likely advise not to give anything, but you could give bute or banamine if it were called for. Careful about reading too much into my response.

actually you said "bute or banamine" (as a suggestion) - bute is never called for in animals we raise for food - I read your response just as you wrote it - I don't make the rules but I think people who raise animals for food and people who are teaching the next generation should play by the rules when it comes to potential violative residues. It is a sad state of affairs but evidenced by many posts on sp most people  don't even read the label of the drugs they give to cattle that are intended for food -

the exercise suggestion is also rational

For a terminal show at the end of the month for a steer without lameness or pain (but a lump) the last thing you want to do is give the steer drugs -
