Hey I just came into a few straws of Sugar Ray.  What kinda cow does he work best on?  and what would the semen be worth?  Thanks

You'll need another generation or three before they're "good" in a contemporary sense.

I would say hold on to them because someday those cattle will be popular again (that type) it may be our great great grand kids breeding cows, but when that day comes around you could be ahead of the game!

Imagine Heat Wave without all the pages and pages of promotional bulls we have from Lautner, Trausch, or Wade Rodgers.  People used to breed dumpy Angus and commercial cows to him and he'd throw good ones.  Very consistent. Very hot.  The best bull of his time...ruled the 80's.

Seriously, I could have been seriously injured when I was 13 or 14 by a Sugar Ray calf. He took off and I didn't let go, he rammed me into a gate and it cracked a rib. I remember gladly taking that rip to town.

Seriously, save it.  We'll need it to breed the sisters to all those midgets we'll be getting by all the fat calf promotional bulls.  They've got no front cannon bones...We'll never revert to the extreme we once were, but some of these soggy frame score 5 cows are not cutting it in my book.

You wouldn't have to go back in many pedigree s to find a shot of Sugar Ray or Power Play!(Not only club calf, but in many breeds)  Ya they are differant from whats happening now. But in the touch of them pedigrees that is the smoke in most of the great ones now. And might have to in ject a little back in down the road. Not saying want them to look like them, but may want some of their attributes. Ya they were crazy but, think how crazy some Angus are and were came from!

When I was little we had 2 sugar ray cows, best way to sum them heavy milkers, but you didnt find out if it was a bull or heifer until the calf was a month old. need horses to get them in to vaccinate... why? because they were freaking nutts!!!!! I would like to see a smaller framed bull like walks alone or ohio senator used on sugar ray cows

He could produce good to very good steers out of poor to average cows...and they all looked alike...growing up in WI, close to Bobby...The State Fair would have 4 Sugar Ray calves go Grand & Reserve in the Jr. and Open Steer Shows.  As far as their temperament, I wasn't aware of any problems.  I do know that on family used to put all their steers, don't know the breeding, in a pen with a bunch of feeder pigs.  Yeah, they might loose a few, but those steers were quite and good for you to do anything on, especially their legs.  Sure PETA would have a fit if they knew...

It was Nero the sire of Sugar were the fire came from! Sugars dam, I believe Super mom called her was quite the cow she was built awsome, think she was 18 or 19 when died! Sugar Ray looked good in live. Rememberthe pictures of him you see, was way before all this feeding and shag O0, and photo shop.

Sugar Ray calves definitely had disposition issues.  Anybody new to the show cattle deal can not even comprehend how bad they were.  That being said, one of the easiest going, best cows I ever owned was a Sugar Ray x Angus cow.  We showed her as a market heifer, and beat most of the local steers she showed against. 

That being said, I would keep a couple of straws in the tank.  Breed to a moderate made, deep made Angus or MaineAngus cow could still really work.

I agree.  I'd consider doing that with "Black Power Play", too.  And I agree, the cows better be small framed and soggy.
