Lonny's comments about the performance of our different sire groups got me curious as well, and today after I weighed the bulls, I did some calculations. Our bulls have been fed an economy 14% pellet, that consists of lentil and pea screenings and about 10% barley screenings, along with free choice hay and mineral. The pellet we feed costs less than half of what they want for a rolled grain ration. The feed mill is super impressed with the gain our bulls have made on this ration as the entire pen has averaged 3.36 lb/day since we started them on the pellet ration on October 26th.
Here is how our bulls have done so far:
The top gaining bull is a Timeline son at 4.11 lb/ day. 8 Timeline sons have averaged 3.53 lbs/ day. The highest WPDA is also a Timeline bull at 3.65 lb/ day. He is a March 16th bull and he weighed 1262 lb today. He also has a BW of 92 lbs so he never missed a beat since he was born.
The second best gaining bull is the only Major Leroy bull in pen and he has averaged 3.99 lb/ day. He also has a WPDA since birth of 3.51 lb/ day and did not have creep during the summer. This bull has averaged 5.19 lb/ day since the last weigh on January 25th
Three Shadybrook Perfection 35S sons have averaged 3.30 lb/ day.
3 Saskvalley Pioneer 126P sons have averaged 3.16 lb/ day but one bull in this group is lagging behind the others for some reason and has pulled the average gain down some.
Four Bar Code bulls have averaged 3.29 lbs/ day which I think is pretty good for all being from 1st calf heifers and all having lower BWs.
All of these average gains listed here are based on the gains over the past 122 days ( since October 26th).
The rep for the mill stopped here today shortly after I had finished weighing the bulls and he said he was very impressed with the gains as they designed this ration for a 3 lb/ day average gain, and this group are doing considerably better than this. The entire pen averaged 4.22 lbs/ day over the last 31 days since the last weighing. I think this is pretty decent especially when we had two different periods of 2 or more days in a row where the wind chill was below -40 F One of these was -53 F with the windchill.
