good morning to everyone.  I was going to try and sync a few of our cows but I know that one cow will not let us give shots in the neck area for some reason.  We have always gave in the neck.  is there another place that is just as effective?  and if so what is the region...  thanks again!

We shoot in the hip. 1 1/2 in 18gauge needles. Rub the spot for a bit after the injection.

This is what we do. Yes, it goes against "quality assurance" for beef production, BUT it works and we have yet to run into any QA problems. Now, some die hard QA people will tell you this is untrue, but a lot of people running cows will tell you that hormone shots just work better when given in the hip. Good luck!

It is best to use an inch & a half needle B/C when you shoot in the hip, it seems that a little of the drug wants to come back out, thus the reason for the longer needle and also for taking a bit of time to rub it in. I actually try to be more deliberate and slowly push the longer needle in to assure that the needle doesn't break or bend. It also doesn't seem to bother the cows as much that way.

If your cows are in very good condition, I would suggest you give the shots in the lower quarter if you cannot give it in the neck, just to insure that you are injecting into muscle and not into fat. This is usually not a concern, but in the event your cows are in high rig, make sure you are injecting into the muscle. And yes, I would agree with using a 1.5 inch needle. It doesn't hurt the cow any more than a 1 inch needle.

Many donor cows that are fat, have poor responses because the injections are put into fat. The absorbsion from the fatty tissue is much lower than it is from muscle.

Figured DL would have hit this one outta the park by now...LOL

So are you following these girls to the plant?  How do you really know there are no injection site lesions?  Really we all should try to give injections in the neck...I am as guilty as anyone but with increasing scrutinity from the government on the use of drugs in food producing animals we need to watch our ass.

definitely use 1 1/2 inch needles, and I go in the neck now.  Have had good responses, but make sure you get into those neck muscles.

Keep in mind that not very many years ago most shots to all cattle were pretty much given in the hip muscle. Remember also that we are talking about giving shots to cows that are not planning on seeing the packing plant for some time and when they do see the kill floor, their cuts of meat are not the most valuable. We do need to be conscious of where and what we are doing there is no doubt about that, but in the original posted question, the member states that they can't give the shots in the neck. I can shoot in the neck, but have better response deep in the hip muscle. I'm sure that quite a few PPL on this board shoot in the hip while setting up females to be bred. JMO.

It's my understanding that there is a big difference in tissue reactions to antibiotics/vaccines vs hormones.  Hormones don't cause reaction problems nearly as much.  Overusing deal is like CAB said- cows are being made into hambuger, usually very late in life.  We give everything to all cattle in the neck except hormones

Like Chambero, we only give hormones in the hip, everything else is given in the neck or leg pit.
