Tagging With New Traceability Protocol

This might be a little out of the ordinary, but it is cattle business.  How are you folks going to ID calves/cattle with the new traceability  regulations?  Myself, and I suppose a lot of you, are gong to have to find space in the ears of our calves for:
1.  Individual, easy to read farm ID tag;
2.  Tattoo if registered or to have a permanent ID;
3.  Calfhood vaccination tattoo;
4.  New ADT tag.
The calfhood has to go in the right ear, so we put our herd ID tag in the left ear.  That already decreases the area/space for a permanent, registration required tattoo.  Where is the new ADT tag going?  What are your procedures or plans to accommodate everything?  Saw calves at Ohio Expo with farm tag in one ear and the new ADT in the other near the top.  I suppose there might be room below it for a registration tattoo, but we still have the calfhood tattoo to find a place for.

Some of the 840 tags also have an RFID as part of them.  We use that 840 number as a registration number for the animal as well.  The 840 RFID tags are tamper evident, so they cannot be reused.

We recommend using the Half-Duplex RFID tags which are white.  These tags are used by the dairy industry and also if anyone has any type of automatic feeder.

The new rules went into effect March 11, 2015.  I am sure that many producers are unaware of this though.

Not sure about your rules but in Canada we need a CCIA RFID tag for traceability.  We put it in the same ear as the farm tag, just deeper in.  Tattoos go in the right ear. Reference photo for fun.

There's a new rule/law that went into effect March 11, 2015 for tracing the origin and movement of cattle.  Not sure if I can remember all the requirements and what cattle fall subject to this.  What I do know is all cattle for exhibition, rodeos, etc., and sexually intact cattle crossing state lines must be identified with one of three or four types of US approved tags.  Cattle going to market can be identified at their destination regarding source of origin.  Any supplier of I.D. supplies have them and there is a procedure to acquire them with user documentation. There's more classes of cattle affected but these are the basic groups.  One thing show and rodeo management will have to do, at least in Indiana, and probably other states as well, is keep a record of the cattle and ownership information of the cattle in the show or rodeo for at least 5 years.

These are the main requirements, but the entire ruling needs to be read and implemented to know what you have to do and what exhibition managers must do.

Individual identification must be recorded on or attached to the CVI for the following groups: 

•All sexually intact cattle and bison 18 months of age or over
•All female dairy cattle of any age
•All male dairy cattle born after 3/11/13
•Cattle and bison of any age used for rodeo, recreational events, shows and exhibitions.


Feeder cattle of beef breeds less than 18 months of age are not included in this requirement.
