In north central Texas, we got some moisture over the weekend.  Personally, we got about 1/4 inch of rain but I think a little further east and south of us got more than that (including the area around Possum Kingdom Reservoir that everyone has heard so much about).  So, we are in much better shape than a week ago.  There still fires going in multiple places though.

As a kid I read a book about the drought in Texas, I do not remember the title just how the rancher would not take aid from the feds, they burned the thorns off of the cactus for the cattle to have something to eat, the  rancher had turned to raising goats to make money before their drought finally ended. I think I read it in the 70s and it took place in the 50s any way it was a great book, I just hope your drought does not equal the one in the book.

I did a search I believe the title was  "The Time It Never Rained"

I'm actually in the water resource business in Texas.  The drought of the 1950s in Texas is considered our state's drought of record and it was a pretty bleak time.  I believe that our current situation is actually as bad in parts of west Texas as the worst of those years, hopefully it won't last as long as back then.

The book you are referring too I think was written by Elmer Kelton and was entitled "The Time It Never Rained".

You should have seen the sale barn in Navasota on Saturday...First time I can remember more cows than calves being sold...Last number I heard was over 4000 went thru and believe it or not prices stayed pretty fair...

were you there waker???? there was a tick over 6000 cows sold. we had 20 run through. (inclucing my baby simbrahs mama). alot of reputable cowmen are having to sell out and restart when we get some rain. we still put out cubes EVERY OTHER DAY and its late april. been doing this since it got dry in october. cattle will be sky high in 6 months after people run out of cows

Yea I was there.. we sold 15 calves and 10 cows...

I had quite a scare today in south Texas. A pipeline crew is working on our home place and started a grass fire and burned 75 acres. We are so fortunate the wind shifted directions last night otherwise the fire would've been heading towards our houses. Instead it burned towards a county road which buffered it.

We're doing ok on the grass situation, I think we have enough to get through summer. I would love a few hurricanes this summer if it means we could get some rain.

How about Tropical Storms instead? My barn is less than a half mile from the water.. ;D

and yes we are thinking that will be our only hope at this point in time..
