I want to thank Oakview Shorthorns for purchasing Diamond Zulu 3Z (thumbsup) Alta Cedar Shorthorns are hauling him to Billings this morning on the first leg of his trip to Iowa. Attached is a video Jaimie made of him including a couple of minutes of video taken yesterday before his big trip.
We will have some calves from him in the spring and I am really looking forward to their arrival.

I will only say I haven't been excited this much about a bull for a long time.  I think I can still tell a good one without show hair, winning fill, and an air pump.  My thanks as well to the Stephensons and all those involved with the delivery process.  I'll sleep better when he gets here!  I've got a dozen fall calvers, so he'll get use soon.

You've got a stud on your hands no doubt  (thumbsup)

If we can just keep importing these superior bulls- it won't be long before the Shorthorn identity here in the US will rise above the show bull(sh*t) stereotype our breed has succumbed to.

<beer> I hope he really clicks with your program.  I know I am looking forward to next spring when we get our Zulu calves on the ground!

Attached are pictures of his 2 full brothers that have gone on to work successfully in ACC Shorthorns with Trooper and Silverwillow Shorthorns with Sergeant York.  Trooper sired one of the high selling bulls at the Sun Country bull sale this past spring!

Nice to see photos of those bulls.  I knew Zulu had some outstanding siblings, I just can't remember seeing photos of them.  I really liked the paternal half brother ACC sold a year or two ago, I think Yagermeister was his name.  I could tell you folks thought a lot of the calf at a young age.  It was very helpful to be able to see photos and videos of Zulu from early calfhood to present.  It was also very important to see that he looked good in all stages of life.  It can be hard to get cattle that look good at two or three months of age, look great as a yearling, and continue to look good coming off pasture.  Maybe somebody can take you out for lunch for running the video camera!  My grandkids are looking forward to his arrival, too.  They have one questions, though.  How did you come up with the name?  I understand that it would be difficult to come up with very many "Z" names.  The only Zulus I vaguely remember would be an old movie entitled "Zulu", I believe it was about an African tribal war, and an actor on the original Hawaii 5-0 TV series.  I think the credits read, "Zulu as Kono."  I often wondered if your real name was Kono, why would you change it to Zulu for TV?  Maybe Kono wasn't authentic Hawaiin enough.

You are right, finding Z names is challenging as is X and Y. We have had a group of cows on shares with Anwender Cattle Co (SP Hilltop) for a few years. In the first calf crop ACC General 4U was their pick and they don't  follow the Year letters in naming their bulls. In General's first calf crop they had ACC Trooper 3X which was one of their picks. We got Diamond Sergeant York 10Y . At ACC they had called him Sergeant and I added York for the Y year. (Seargeant York was a decorated American soldier from the first world war). For the Z year I drew a blank on military Z names. My wife's family is from South Africa and my father in law had always praised the Zulu people and said how they were one of the great warrior tribes so I used Zulu!

Gary Cooper plays a great Sergeant York.  I have it and Audie Murphy's biography, I think "Hell is for Heroes" is the name of that movie, in my collection of illegally obtained video movies.  Thank goodness for HBO and VCRs.

Should have looked it up first.  "To Hell and Back" is the name of Audie Murphy's movie.  Sorry.  I'd feel bad if that was the first mistake I'd ever made.  Actually, that makes 5.

Sometimes it happens.  I made a mistake once, I thought I had been wrong, but turned out I wasn't.  8)

I am pretty excited about some of our first calves by Diamond Zulu 3Z. Here is one born this afternoon that weighed 92 lbs. He is out of a Diamond Prophecy 21P daughter and her dam is Diamond Nicola Susan 23N.

That mud!

I hope you are in for a great season with the rain that caused this amount of mud.  Calf looks nice and thick but a bit 'soft' to really comment, good luck with him.  I presume he is only hours old in the picture?

The mud is mostly from the the melting snow and runoff. We had a light rain and more snow on Saturday but it melts pretty fast this time of year. The calf is about 6 hours old in the photo.

We had a little more of our spring frozen rain today... Unfortunately the grass is being postponed, we were really hoping the frost in the ground would lift so the grass could start growing, mother nature of course has differnt plans

My apologies for the late response, I have been on my annual family vacation and I don't take any electronic devices with, only a phone for the office to get hold of me, at lunch time, only in case of emergency!

That weather of yours looks pretty grim, I had a great vacation, most days sunny and over 25 degrees (Celsius), except for about 250mm of rain over 48 hours last Wednesday and Thursday!  I will post some pictures when I have downloaded them from my camera.

I did sneak off on Friday for a 640km (400 mile) round trip to start my CIDR programme, 22 suitable out of 25 checked!  Cattle were looking excellent.  Also dehorned some calves, this needs to stop!

The weather has been a challenge this year but it has been even worse in a lot of places across Nort America. I know parts of Saskatchewan got a heavy wet snow yesterday. We had snow on the weekend but ours all melted yesterday. Snow seems like a a small problem when you read about the devastating tornadoes happening in the US.(is this not early for tornadoes?)
What are you AIing to this year?

One cow to Spry's All Gold D052 ( She has really clicked, twice already!), two of his heifers to Saskvalley Yesterday 116Y, seven cows to a South African bull, Nonen Gallipoli, and the remaining twelve cows to Crawfdown Fighter Pilot 1W.
