herefords for sure had when when i was little never gave me trouble as a young showman

Herfords!  This was my sons first year showing and we got him a September Herford heifer to show.  Our fair is in July so he had a smaller calf to show it really helped his confidence to be able to show a smaller calf. Generally speaking most herford calves are pretty easy going and easy to work with. Not to say you cant have a difficult Herford but most are real easy going

I'll throw Charolais out as a wild card.  Every calf I ever showed was either a purebred breeding animal or crossed with a black breed for a show steer.  All 23 calves that I showed were dog gentle, (also including a Maine/Herf steer I just sold) and my entire cowherd now follows me around like ducklings because a large portion of them were show heifers back in the day

That's not breed...that's taking time to work with one and it getting used to you.  I have one broke to ride too, but I spent hours messing with her and doing anything and everything to her as a heifer.  I will agree hereford influence are usually pretty dog tame.  One idea might be to find someone else in your area that always has tame cattle and talk to them about it.
