The inside of a slaughter house

Well today we took my pig to slaughter, the first time I have ever seen the inside of a slaughter house. It was pretty gross there where some baby calves, cows, and a bull also there. My pig and some sows woo man it was nasty they had a shed full of hides with salt on it. We followed the path to take my pig to her pen which led us behind the shed well the blood was draining off of the hides and we had to walk on it NASTY!!!! But I guess it was an experience, I believe that if you can't eat what you raise or even see first hand the horrors of a slaughter house you prolly shouldne be doing it. It sure was interesting and nasty....

We have a steer or two and a pig or two butchered on the farm each year. A guy comes over with a truck and does it all here. My two teenage girls watched a couple years ago and were fascinated by the whole thing. The guy was very informative and explained things as he went along. I think they learned a lot about a beef and pig market project and what the end result really is. I personally would like for all youth market exhibitors be required to see this in some form to help them see what the end result is.

We used to have a carcuss class at out fair but did not get enough entry's to keep it going.

I totally agree that all youth that raise projects should have to see the end result I learned alot it was an experience for sure!!!! Very interesting

I take a meat processing class at  my school, and it is very informative. the animals come in off the trailer in the morning and we do the whole process ourselves. i enjoy it and think that, ya you shoould know how things are done of your gonna raise em.

YA we have that same class we dont do the kill though only the processing I think alot of people get in this and dont really know what its like at the end I leanred alot just from a small slaughter house but still the experience was like no other.

My family every year butchers about 8 pigs that my uncle raises. Its almost like a family reunion although people at school says bonding like that isnt natural. I think its odd but its reallly my favorite time of the year. Actually butchering time is better than Christmas....I know my familys weird

We used to butcher chickens with our family.  The boys would kill em and gut em , the girls would pluck and boil em.  It was actually fun except for the smell.

watching someone pick their nose and eat their bugers is a lot more gross than a slaughterhouse.

We started having some of our animals butchered here at my house. I wont watch the killing part but after that I am fine with watching. My sister and I both found that we learned a lot from watching our butcher. We have had a couple pigs, our 800 lb sow, and a bunch of lambs done here. We have a steer thats next...We have been to our butchers shop several times and he will walk us through the process with the cutting and grading and packaging. I do agree that everyone should watch at least some part of the slaughtering and butchering process in order to fully understand what they are doing.

i will try to find this, but Baxter Black has a great article on this subject that I think all youngsters should read.  Titled "Goats, Old Hens and Thanksgiving."  It is a very well thought out explanation of "our" disgust with the process that puts food on our table.  If anyone can find it, please post on this thread

Well now the pig is dead she will be picked up and brought to the school for processing and my teachers have invitged and recommended me to help process my pig well this shall be interesting for me the first time ever!!!!
